...columnists Stephan and Abigail Thernstrom at did their homework on Black Liberation Theology and the "black church":
Most black churchgoers belong to congregations that are overwhelmingly African-American and are affiliated with one of the historically black religious denominations such as the African Methodist Episcopal Church (AME) or the National Baptist Convention. Rev. Wright's Trinity Church, on the other hand, is a predominantly black branch of a white denomination that is not part of "the African-American religious tradition." The United Church of Christ (known until 1957 as the Congregational Church) has a little over a million members; a mere 4 percent of them are black. Fewer than 50,000 blacks in the entire nation worship at a UCC church. In contrast, 98 percent of the National Baptist Convention's 4 million members are African Americans. Add in black Methodists and Pentecostals, as well as other black Baptists, and the total comes to more than 14 million members of an organized, predominantly African-American church.

If it's not, then Wright is in league with a group that's part of COCU and which swaps ministers and communion with the Disciples of Christ (Christian) who once ordained the Reverend Jim Jones who took his congregation to Guyana to drink coolaid.
Again, I believe Wright's deal is independent and he doesn't share the money with anyone ~ particularly not those insufferable old Puritans!
UCC tend to be very liberal black and white Protestants, but black liberation theology is NOT promoted by the vast majority of them, no matter what nutty Rev. Wright says.
In March of 2007, FOX News host Sean Hannity had engaged Obamas pastor in a heated interview about his Churchs teachings. For many viewers, the ensuing shouting match was their first exposure to "Black Liberation Theology"...
Like the pro-communist Liberation Theology that swept Central America in the 1980s and was repeatedly condemned by Pope John Paul II, Black Liberation Theology combines warmed-over 1960s vintage Marxism with carefully distorted biblical passages. However, in contrast to traditional Marxism, it emphasizes race rather than class. The Christian notion of "salvation" in the afterlife is superseded by "liberation" on earth, courtesy of the establishment of a socialist utopia.

The UCC isn’t even Christian.
Jim Jones, just like Rev Jeremiah Wright was nothing more than a revolutionary Marxist who used religion to advance the cause of communism. Plain and simple.
"One of his [Rev Jim Jones] sources of inspiration was the controversial International Peace Mission movement leader Father Divine.[33] Jones had borrowed the term 'revolutionary suicide'[30] from Black Panther leader Huey Newton who had argued 'the slow suicide of life in the ghetto' ought to be replaced by revolutionary struggle that would end only in victory (socialism and self determination) or revolutionary suicide (death)."
Founding of the [Peoples] Temple:
In 1951, Jones began attending communist meetings and rallies in Indianapolis.[4] Jones became flustered at harassment he received during the McCarthy Hearings,[4] particularly, regarding meetings between Jones and his mother with Paul Robeson.[5] This, among other things, provoked a seminal moment for Jones where he asked himself "how can I demonstrate my Marxism? The thought was, infiltrate the church."[5][4]

Jonestown's Formation And Operation
Jim Jones as portrayed in a brochure of the Peoples TempleMain article: Jonestown In the summer of 1977, Jones and most of the 900 members of the People's Temple moved to Guyana from San Francisco after media pressure built.[20] Jones left one night after an editor at New West magazine read Jones an article to be published by Marshall Kilduff detailing allegations by former Temple members.[20][15] Jones named the settlement Jonestown after himself.
Jones purported to establish Jonestown as a benevolent model communist community stating, "I believe were the purest communists there are." [21] Jones' wife, Marceline, described Jonestown as "dedicated to live for socialism, total economic and racial and social equality. We are here living communally."[21] Jones wanted to construct a model community to show others and stated that Prime Minister of Guyana Forbes Burnham "couldnt rave enough about us, uh, the wonderful things we do, the project, the model of socialism."[22] In that regard, like the restrictive emigration policies of the then Soviet Union, Cuba, North Korea and other communist republics, Jones did not permit members to leave Jonestown.[23]

Oh, Jimbo Jones - we used to be neighbors....another shining example of the Religious Left.
His only response is going to be "but that was 30 years ago, eh what"
Communists are only "religious" in the sense that they worship an old man with a long beard. Beyond that, there is no place for God in their world.
You have your narrow minded head stuck where the sun doesn't shine.
There's more than one.
There's more than one.
If you weren't talking about the UCC that Wright's Church was affiliated with then what would be the point of your comment?
I still feel the same way about your post.
Much more like Jim Jones' operation than anything else.
Much more like Jim Jones' operation than anything else.
If you want to call Wright's church in Chicago that I'm not going to argue with you.
However if you are classifying all UCC Churches that way you have your head stuck even further where the sun doesn't shine that I said in my first post.
From some points of view within the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) the UCC fellows within COCU are not sufficiently Christian for joint services and recognition of baptisms. For others, they're OK.
It's not like I have no idea what UCC is.
On the other hand, Rev Wright's church is not part of UCC ~ it is, instead, it's own denomination ~ Trinity UCC.
That is not the way I understand it, and I don't think the UCC headquarters understands it that way either.
If you go there you can find references to him.
