PHOENIX – For some, Cinco de Mayo meant a chance to take a bat to the likeness of Sheriff Joe Arpaio.
Cinco de Mayo also represented a celebration for the opening of a new youth center near 13th Street and Van Buren in downtown Phoenix. Part of the celebration was beating two Sheriff Joe Arpaio piñatas, which was a part of a fundraiser.
People bought tickets for a chance to take a swing at the sheriff. A lot of the people in attendance said they took the chance in fun because they are living in fear as the sheriff continues to launch those controversial “crime sweeps” targeting heavily-Hispanic communities around the Valley.
Other people said the piñatas allowed them to work out some aggression and they also served as a symbol that many are just fed up.
The sheriff said he did not feel threatened by the whole thing but he called it a disgrace and said those participating are setting a horrible example for their children.
But I think it's great! Let them keep taking this kind of anti-American action in public and watch how public opinion swings even further away from them.
Once again proving ICE can't find an illegal in the middle of a Mexican protest parade down the middle Main St., USA or a pinata smacking party.
Who paid for this youth center? If it was paid for with tax dollars, the effigy thing should have been stopped dead cold.
That sheriff is an elected official that has not broken any laws or done anything to get himself turned out of office.
What’s to stop bank robber’s families from taking the likeness of police officers and doing the same thing? Is that what our communities are supposed to become, skank infested barios where honorable men are killed in effigy, a slow-burn hatred for them sponsored by low lifes?
I hope Bush is proud of himself.
What is the fear, if folks are here legally? None.

What bothers me, is that the person who was supposed to honor his oath of office, has instead fead into this despicable situation. Illegal immigration, and the support for it is pure evil on a number of levels. It’s a betrayal of our nation and it’s citizens.

Sadly I am watching it become like that all over my state. Small towns just ruined. It is an utter disgrace. I refuse to go into the town next to me without my husband. It is that unsafe. Funny I hear these illegals talk when they want something in decent English but go to traffic court & all I hear is I no speakda the Eng. Shaking my head again in disgust.
