OTIS, Ore. -- An Oregon couple received a frightening phone call from their son in Afghanistan when he inadvertently called home during battle.
Stephen Phillips and other soldiers in his Army MP company were battling insurgents when his phone was pressed against his Humvee. It redialed and called his parents in the small Oregon town of Otis.

Dumb ass. I hope his CO chewed a huge piece off. Having a cell phone while on an operation is nuts. It can be lost/obtained by terrorists who know how to use auto-dial. There’s got to be more discipline for cell phones.

I’m sorry they heard the battle, but the simple bravery of the young man when he said “don’t let grandma hear it”. I almost cried. He’s out there doing a man’s job, and God Bless Him.
We sent our son a satellite phone, too, but he had the good sense to leave it in Kandahar. Too bad today, because I would love to wish him a happy birthday.
Cell phone towers and maintenance personnel are apparently on the short list with de-mining teams of things you do not touch in Afghanistan, or the locals will rise up against you.
