WASHINGTON President Bush called on Myanmar's military junta on Tuesday to allow the United States to provide disaster assistance after a devastating cyclone.
The United States has made an initial aid contribution but we want to do a lot more," Bush said in the Oval Office. "We're prepared to move U.S. Navy assets to help find those who have lost their lives, to help find the missing, to help stabilize the situation. But in order to do so, the military junta must allow our disaster assessment teams into the country."
The death toll from Tropical Cyclone Nargis in Myanmar, also known as Burma, has soared above 22,000. The storm hit the Southeast Asian country early Saturday with winds of up to 120 mph. Hundreds of thousands of people have been left homeless.
"So our message is to the military rulers: let the United States come and help you help the people," Bush said.
The U.S. Navy has three ships in the Gulf of Thailand that could be dispatched to Myanmar if needed. The USS Essex, an amphibious assault ship, as well as two other vessels in its strike group the USS Juneau and the USS Harper's Ferry are there preparing to participate in an annual exercise with Thailand naval forces.

Probie mistake. He will be beaten until his judgment improves.
My comment DID NOT lead to the illegal invasion. IF there was a small amount of reading comprehension left on FR, my post would have never been seen as such.
Thank you very much!
Sorry. Great video (now that I’ve watched it).
As for Harriet Myers, I thought that was brilliantly played by Bush. Look at the result.
We have offered assistance, let the rest of the wealthy dictatorships around the world help them out. Oh yeah, pretty much all the dictatorships and other communist nations are freaking poor.
Kaslin, sorry I picked on your post about helping Mirmar’s people, I just get frustrated with the results of all this Global welfare...this remark sums up up my frustrations:
“Our liberal leaders and media assure us that by sending billions of our hard-earned money to Muslims we contribute to the creation of the new multicultural society, new model of the free and liberal world, and what is very important, that by sending hundreds of billions of dollars every year to the bottomless pit of Islamic countries, we reduce the social base of terrorism. So, we have to work hard(otherwise there will be no money to send),to help those who openly declare that they want to kill us and destroy our civilization hoping that ,finally, they will understand how good we are and in this case, we shall be awarded with the tickets for the International Cruiser Liberal Multicultural Dream. Well, maybe in the second or third class but what a magnificent ship!
How it will go into the Bright Liberal Multicultural Future!!!And we on board!!! Guys,it´s a ticket on Titanic. Let´s have a smoke-and let them go on it alone. Our leaders have the tickets to the first-class, and the first-class passengers have pretty good chances to be saved in case of a catastrophe. But such as you and me-only in the film, for future generations.
While Muslims direct the money they get from us on Jihad against us, ANY aid to Islamic countries must be stopped”
“The Left just likes to funnel millions of aid dollars toward brown people so they can feel good about THEMSELVES, and relieve their guilt over their racism.
Not like the money ever gets to the homeless peasants - instead it will go to the thug regime.”
You are absolutely right. In addition, we don’t need to be sending our tax money there.
“With an answer like this, no wonder the left thinks we are cold”
Who cares what the left thinks? They are twisted in their thinking. You can’t reason with a sick mind.
The last I heard is that there are still hundreds of unclaimed bodies in New Orleans stored in warehouses. They died during Katrina. If bush wants to do something good, he ought to have the Feds pay to give those Americans in NOLA a decent burial (but he won’t). There is something drastically wrong with that boy!
People of good will can argue the wisdom of getting involved in Iraq in the first place and perhaps even the wisdom of remaining there.
I believe we were correct to get involved there initially.
But once we wrecked Saddam's military and removed him from power, we should have skedaddled. Playing social worker is not the function of the American military. We made and delivered an effective message - screw with us and you're dead.
But to globalist Bush and his advisers, this was not enough. As a Presidential-Wannabe of the entire world, his goal was to create a democracy where none ever existed before in an area full of turmoil, inhabited by people with a limited sense of national identity, and committed to a medieval religious and political belief system locked in the 7th Century. How smart is that?
Thanks to Bush's flawed perception of goals in that area, we are now committed to securing that objective, regardless of the number of lives lost or wealth squandered. In a part of the world where saving face means everything and backing down is fatal, he has manipulated us into this position. As we are still locked in a life and death struggle with Islam, an enemy the Administration refuses to acknowledge of the source of our problems, he has committed us to fighting a battle we cannot afford to loose on grounds favorable to our enemy and not to us.
Just like Presidential-wannabe of the entire world was willing to invest millions of dollars in Africa, he is now apparently committed to investing more millions in Myanmar.
Well said.
This dictatorship, much like democrat Gov. Blanco, reacted the same way BY NOT ALLOWING AID to get to the people. There is no difference at all.
Bush should have taken over command. Eisenhower took over from Wallace when he wanted to desegregate the schools down south. Or at least Bush could have publicly denounced Blanco and said "I am willing to help right now." Why doesn't bury the dead bodies that are still in warehouses in NOLA?
Its her fault.
