Census sheets found in a safe at a polygamous sect's ranch in west Texas both support and contradict the state's claim of a widespread culture of underage marriage.
Texas authorities used the sheets to convince a judge that there was a "pervasive pattern" among the FLDS of marrying underage girls to older men.
A review of the "Father's Family Information" sheets shows a handful of 16-year-old wives, 13 young monogamous couples and 24 men with multiple wives - including one man with 21 wives and 36 children.
A Texas Ranger testified about the census sheets during an April 17-18 court hearing before 51st District Judge Barbara Walther, who accepted the records as evidence despite objections from attorneys representing FLDS parents and children. The pages were recently released by the court. Sgt. Danny Crawford said the sheets were found April 5 in an office at the ranch, home to members of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Texas authorities raided the ranch on April 3 after receiving reports of an abused 16-year-old, calls now being investigated as a possible hoax.
Authorities have said, however, they found evidence of a polygamous lifestyle and underage marriage practices at the ranch that supported removing 464 children.
The bishop's record sheets helped them make that case.

Not saying they should not but i think trying the women would wind up a pr disaster.
In Texas, under 18 are not subject to common law marriage. In fact under 16 require permission from a judge, as well as parents.
Common law statutes are not going to help the FLDS overmuch.
Good of you to bring that case up. I took Crystal Gail Mangum's ever changing, and seldom overlapping stories as an indicator of who was lying. I have made fun of those who foolishly chose to believe her.
Similarly in this case, the FLDS adults ever changing, seldom overlaping stories of whom is married to whom, and what parent matches up with which child is a clear indicator as to whether it is they, or the Child Protective Services personnel and those who have accused the FLDS that are lying.
I am now and will in the future be making fun of those who ignored this, in exactly the same way I do with the Duke case.
And what church is that?
That’s sad but it’s their family...their rules. They must have seen something special in you ‘)
I’ve always felt that we will hear from Elian again:’)
“I am now and will in the future be making fun of those who ignored this, in exactly the same way I do with the Duke case. “
Perhaps that’s not exactly what you meant, but without the ability to mind-read, I have to go by your words.
You could bring this comparison up, to use as an analogy.
You could ask do they see that the behavior of the alleged ‘victims’ is the same.
But, if you make ‘fun’ of them, you are no better than those who make personal attacks.
Do you understand what I mean? I just would hate to see you getting into trouble, in your zeal.
Preaching over.
Thanks...
That does happen in some Muslim areas in India, no?
Well, see you are correct on one aspect but you miss the larger point of what government officials and media spoon fed so many here’s hero Nancy Grace. She bought into the media myth and the government line and went full bore or did you forget that? See, here again, the whipped up frenzy is upon the likes of Nancy and the media, and a few hysterical people here. I, looking at people like KC Johnson in that case, wait until facts come out, wherever they finally do come out to pass judgment on everyone in this sect or to make a determination on where the real truths lie. There is time.
I feel fortunate that I was acceptable to them and to her.
“If I read the “post after”, I’ll respond to it there.”
Well, you either already read it, and refuse to respond (that’s the safest bet you have), or you are revealing the truth about yourself.
The fact I already made you aware it is there precludes you saying you didn’t notice it.
Why won’t you deal with questions asked of you?
Why do you insist everyone only deal with the one question you have, but won’t deal with any of the questions asked of you?
Surely, if you really want answers to your question, you would continue the discussion.
Or is that the point? You aren’t interested in any answers.
Because your question was answered, and I pinged you to it, and the post with the answer is to YOU.
Can you explain this?
Your belief that media and government shenanigans is more important than truth is irrelevant to me. Honest forces in government ultimately arose and prevailed.
Who is telling the truth, and who is continually coming up with a new dodge? My point about the parallel between Crystal Mangum's changing stories, and the FDLS's changing stories is not deniable. Which is why you are trying to change the focus to the media feeding frenzy.
Actually, I didn’t. I asked a question. I didn’t say what the answer would be, although I do fear what the answer is — that is a feeling of MINE, not a projection of what someone else is feeling.
I’m really trying to figure out while so many freepers not only don’t think there’s anything wrong here (which is fine, we all are making our own opinions based on incomplete information), but go further and insist that anybody who disagrees with them are really apologists for child rape, polygamy, and the practices of FLDS.
I’m trying to find a way to get people to think beyond their personal hatred for what the FLDS is alleged to have done, and consider the PRINCIPLE involved in a discussion of how government is handling the situation.
Again, at this point I’m not trying to convince those opposed to me that they are wrong, I’m just trying to see if I can convince them that it isn’t evil to have an opposing opinion to theirs.
They did? They rose? They were immense pressure to do something while the local and main stream media hammered away. Had folks like KC Johnson not given so much to expose what was going on, it likely would have continued for shame.
Some of you have way too much faith in folks in Government, while I clearly want them held accountable at every turn. Who is reporting the changing stories? Who I ask? Do you believe everything they tell you or do you see that the AG getting involved means that some low level government folks are in way over their head?
We would have never known about Crystal Magnum’s changing stories if the government were the only one to issue statements we believe. Correct?
Anyway, it is pointless, because I illustrated what I perceive to be an almost grave miscarry of justice in Durham, while you see it as another bright spot for the altar of Government power.
I know better, and I coined the Nancy Grace Mob brigade here. They run rampant as you can see. Nancy says jump to this tune and they can’t sing and leap fast enough. Funny.
Yes, because police NEVER abuse bad people, and the CPS NEVER takes a child away from good parents.
And there is absolutely NO chance whatsoever that ANY of the families at this compound were in fact NOT abusing their children or deserving under law of having their children taken away.
And anybody who wants to even DISCUSS that possibility is just trying to legitimize child rape.
I don't look to see whether one side wears a government banner or a civilian banner when gaging who is honest or who is lying.
That is why It was possible for me to come down on the side of the Lacrosse players in that case, and on the side of CPS in this case. I just look at the evidence.
