PHOENIX (AP) - Republican presidential hopeful John McCain says the focus on illegal immigration during the Republican primary season harmed his party's image among Hispanics.
Speaking to reporters in Phoenix on Cinco de Mayo, McCain said that Hispanic citizens want America's borders secured and illegal immigrants to be treated humanely.
He says low-income Hispanic citizens are vulnerable to losing their jobs to the lower wages accepted by illegal immigrants.
On the subject of broader immigration policies, McCain says local governments would not have to take on immigration problems had the federal government overhauled the country's immigration policies.
McCain spoke at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport before his flight to North Carolina.
Where is that FR graphics dept. when you need them? lol
Thank you! I’m a bit embarrassed that I didn’t recognize it earlier... but I did slither over to google and figure it out, LOL.
Conincidentally, I came across this photo tonight of an old Mecha flyer, right after. It struck me that there was a snake in the beak of the bird (vulture?).

I suspect folks at the RNC will be sittin' around scratching their heads saying
"I can't believe the people that said for the past two years they wouldn't vote for McCain ... didn't."
Happy to oblige.
My perception is that the country is pretty well split between the left and the right. In the last election, the left prevailed and captured the legislative bodies. That indicates a shift leftward.
To win elections you must have voters. To capture the left leaning but vacillating center, a leftward shift in one is necessary. A strong, solidly presented program of Republican thought can also persuade the left of center.
When I come here on a daily basis and read the arrogant vanity comments of the ultra right I am chagrined by the inability many here to see that to govern you must first win elections.
Paul has some great ideas. Too bad he also has some straight out of the Lewrockwell school of leftist ‘conservatism’.
But when conservatives run as conservatives, they win elections. When they run as something left of center, their supporters stay home and the democrats win the day.
Hillary and McCain can see each other in hell, along with the magic Barack.
