McCain: Focus on illegal immigration hurt GOP's image

PHOENIX (AP) - Republican presidential hopeful John McCain says the focus on illegal immigration during the Republican primary season harmed his party's image among Hispanics.

Speaking to reporters in Phoenix on Cinco de Mayo, McCain said that Hispanic citizens want America's borders secured and illegal immigrants to be treated humanely.

He says low-income Hispanic citizens are vulnerable to losing their jobs to the lower wages accepted by illegal immigrants.

On the subject of broader immigration policies, McCain says local governments would not have to take on immigration problems had the federal government overhauled the country's immigration policies.

McCain spoke at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport before his flight to North Carolina.

I have enought of a problem voting for this guy and now he says this?

I’m really torn but that sounds like something every voter has a right to do.

That would keep my streak of never voting dem for President going since 1972 also, even if it meant writing in someone other than the GoP nominee for the first time ever.

As a matter of fact, yes, I can. I refuse to be blackmailed into voting for a candidate as bad as McCain to avoid having a president as bad as Hillary/Obama. The GOP and those who supported McCain in the primaries are solely responsible for the upcoming train wreck. My conscience is clean.

That map is inaccurate. Instead of vast parts of SW US under Mexican control, it should show LA, SF, and Washington DC under Mexican control!!!
