PHOENIX (AP) - Republican presidential hopeful John McCain says the focus on illegal immigration during the Republican primary season harmed his party's image among Hispanics.
Speaking to reporters in Phoenix on Cinco de Mayo, McCain said that Hispanic citizens want America's borders secured and illegal immigrants to be treated humanely.
He says low-income Hispanic citizens are vulnerable to losing their jobs to the lower wages accepted by illegal immigrants.
On the subject of broader immigration policies, McCain says local governments would not have to take on immigration problems had the federal government overhauled the country's immigration policies.
McCain spoke at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport before his flight to North Carolina.
This is the third thread that I’ve perused in the last hour about this issue, AND STILL THE MCBOTS ARE HIDING UNDER THEIR BEDS.
Well we don’t know whether he “lied” or was misquoted.
But I would like some clarification, especially since we are dealing with AP.

Good place for the weinies. Don’t want em here anyhow.
Oh right! Along with hold Charles Keatings criminal coat whilst Keating killed old people's life savings without their knowledge!!!
The GOP's McMistake sucks canal water and everybody knows it!!! It's just plain UGLY, that is all!!!
Well, if McCain was misquoted he should immediately issue a clarification.
If he doesn’t, then we can conclude he agrees with the piece.
“Maybe Americans should organize a one week vacation in — say — Acapulco, or Cancun — and host a mass protest for Mexican wages (in Mexico), LOL.”
I’m in. You do realize they put you in jail for that in Mexico?
I’ve said before, a million or two of us ought to just cross the border to see what would happen.
Can’t argue with that!!! Sadly...

That is an outright lie. McCain has never admitted his plan was wrong. On the MTP, he said he said he would sign McCain-Kennedy if it was sent to him in the WH. The only "message" he seems to have gotten from his experience in 2007 is that the public wants enforcement first. McCain still believes that you can't deport the illegals already here and that you must legalize their status, i.e., amnesty. McCain still believes in his plan, but he is just repackaging it by sequencing it.
Do YOU have a plan? I assume its to build a big wall. And then what? Are you willing to shoot people that cross it? Have to make that decision going in...or youve wasted time and money on the wall.
It is called Attrition thru enforcement. It works as the laws in AZ and Oklahoma and Prince William County, VA are proving.
Can YOU define define EXACTLY how agressive youd like to be....simplify this since (oh great an knowledgeable one) since all of America cant. Show we Boarder States the way.
Enforce our existing lawss and give 287 [g] authority to state and local law enforcement authorities to leverage the hundred of thousands of law enforcement officers around the country. And penalize the employers of the illegal aliens severely.
McCain is sliding in on a notion of his war heroism. People have no clue what theyre voting on. Remember, the media has had nothing but good things to say about McCain.
We all know that everyone here trusts the media. Especially conservative voters. I am shamed by some here who claim to be conservatives while they watch our borders and party sold down the river. I am so disgusted at this point I can simply barf.
No, McCain gamed the system, which was the way the GOP hierarchy wanted it to work. They want to marginalize the conservative influence within the party. They believe that the future of the GOP lies in attracting more moderate Dems and independents.
You two are spot on.....

Doesn't matter how you spin it. The anti-illegals movement lost big in 2006. Shamnesty was never proposed in the last Congress because it would have lost by more than it did in the current one. We still see many attempts to resurrect it as well.
Also, note that many of the Democrats lied about their positions or where anti-illegal alien.
I maintain that it was low conservative turnout that did in most of the GOP. I don't want to think that if conservative turnout was high in 2006 that many would be so stupid as to vote Democrat. Of course, we've seen the Democrat party pick up at least 2 more "conservative" districts since 2006, so either conservatives are still staying home, or they really are stupid and vote Democrat when the GOP goes astray.
And as polling has shown it is because the media was lying.
No self-respecting conservative gets his or her news from the mainstream media.
Most McCain voters did not know his position because the media never called him on his lies during debates.
McCain never lied about his pro-shamnesty stance. Never once did he say he would vote against shamnesty. His record was open for all the voters to see.
I think you are gutsier than I am. Just reading the sentences together gave me pause...
Of course it is a myth. That's why Senators Talent, Santorum and Allen were all able to push against shamnesty in 2007.
Name one who didnt run against an anti-illegal Democrat.
There are no anti-illegal Democrats. All voting for Democrats did was empower the far left, which is pro-illegal.
Have you listened to him lately--he's still the same old McCain. Border enforcement (kind of), massive guest worker (visas for all!), tamper-proof biometric ID (papers please!), then Amnesty for everybody! Woohoo! Let's celebrate! $2-3 TRILLION dollars is nuttin' to give a "helping hand" to "God's children."
What a guy! He sure does love to spend OtherPeoplesMoney!
Illegal immigration had nothing to do with this. Republicans lost because of the general anti-Republican mood of the nation, that it's the Democrats "turn."
Anti-illegals GOP primary candidates for President also went nowhere.
PRO-ILLEGAL Republicans will really go nowhere if they keep buying this ridiculous false pretense that they need to "reach out" to Hispanics. These illegals aren't going to vote Republican if they become legalized.
Pukeneos? LOL.
