In the [Gas] Tank for Obama: CNN Rips Hillary's Tax Holiday
NewsBusters ^ | Mark Finkelstein

Check out the screencap from Carol Costello's CNN Newsroom segment of this morning on Hillary's gas-tax holiday plan. Costello's message: Clinton's proposal isn't just bad economics. It's not simply Santa Claus politics. No, it could . . . put your life in danger.

CAROL COSTELLO: For cash-strapped consumers, any reduction in gas prices would be like, well, like Santa coming into town early—or so it seemed on the stump.

Clinton now suggests taxing oil companies to make up for the money lost to her proposed holiday gas tax.

Oh, of course -- great idea! And the oil companies will just eat the increase in their taxes . . . /s

Am I missing something here -- or is she???

So the oil companies raise their prices for the ‘holiday’ to exactly cover the increase tax cost to them..

Can’t we find any politicians with brains to run the country?

May all of the Democratic rainbow coalition be of the following mind throughout the rest of their primary and then onto their convention floor.

Canada is the largest single exporter of oil to the U.S. & we have the world's second largest reserves. Despite that — our gas prices are 30% higher than those in the U.S. We also have a lot more miles of road per person — so it does cost proportionally more to maintain our highway system.

The U.S. is the world's largest importer of oil — it would make more sense to increase pump prices, to reduce demand. Lower demand in the U.S. would lower world prices — the combination of lower prices for crude, and less demand would mean fewer boat-loads of money leaving the U.S. to pay for oil.

It's nice to be on the receiving end of part of that greenback pipeline — but, for the longterm, I would rather see the U.S. economy healthy and growing; plus, I'd rather not see so much money going into the war chests of most of the other oil-exporting nations.

This has to be a manufactured story. I can’t see anyone saying, “Oh please, don’t take away my gas taxes!”

It’s not a joke to a interstate trucker.

No kidding - if the Highway Trust Fund dries up because these idiots want to temporarily cancel the gas tax, then truckers are in trouble (the Highway Trust Fund will probably run out as it is in 2009 or 2010 - it hasn't been increased since either the STA Act was signed by President Reagan in '82 or 83, or something Bush or Clinton signed in the early '90s).

Are they going to tell truckers "sorry about all of the potholes and bridges falling apart, but the trust fund ran out of money, BUT HEY, WE SAVED YOU SOME MONEY BY CUTTING THE TAX - YOU'LL BE ABLE TO USE THAT MONEY TO BUY NEW TIRES THAT YOU NEED BECAUSE YOU ARE DRIVING ON CRAPPY HIGHWAYS THAT NEED MAINTENANCE!"

The funniest thing about all of this - it would cost money to cancel the gas tax temporarily - a lot of paperwork would be generated, databases would have to be tweaked (lots of overtime), etc.

They would probably lay off the people who work on the highway infrastructure as well - God only knows how much it would cost us to rehire them at the end of the summer or to find replacements.

Then again, Hillary has never been one to think that far ahead - she thinks the American people can be bought off by $30 or $50 over the summer.

She doesn't realize just how much it costs to maintain the highways and that a large chunk of that comes from the Highway Trust Fund which comes from the gas tax.

Of course, if you pointed out to her that canceling the gas tax would cripple the work and maintenance needed on the interstate highways, and that it would hurt truckers the most by causing even worse conditions than already exist on the highways, she'd give you some sob story about how her great-uncle was a trucker and she grew up driving across the US with him.

I'm not a trucker, but even I know how stupid it would be to stop a major chunk of funding for the interstate highways. The highways are already in bad enough conditions in many areas. If they drop the gas tax and cut the funding for the highways, we might as well tell truckers "sorry, find another job" and we might as well get use to seeing the prices on food, clothes, etc. go through the roof as alternate transportation methods have to be found.

Unfortunately the liberals latched on to this "gas tax" not realizing that it's a tax that actually makes sense - i.e. it goes back into the Highway Trust Fund. The liberals also think Americans can be bought off for $40 or $50.

All these liberals supporting temporarily lifting the gas tax - notice they aren't volunteering their pet pork-barrel projects to be canceled and save the taxpayers some money.
