Jindal: 'I'm exactly where I need to be'

By Jon Ward May 5, 2008

BATON ROUGE, La. — He is the future of the Republican Party, some say, and has risen so high for the age of 36 that his name is tossed about as a vice-presidential pick.

But Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal said he wants to keep his job, although he expects to lose popularity as he pushes his ambitious two-term plan to remake his state in the wake of Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

"I told the voters of Louisiana this is a historic, one-time opportunity to change our state, and I want to be a part of that," he said during an hourlong helicopter ride to an event in Shreveport last month.

"I"m exactly where I need to be," said Mr. Jindal, who is the youngest governor in the nation and the son of Indian immigrants.

POTUS Notes: Jindal can't tamp down VP rumors

At 25, Mr. Jindal became Louisiana's secretary of health and hospitals. At 30, he was nominated by President Bush to be an assistant secretary at the Department of Health and Human Services.

When he talks about using his political capital and how he is "not a big believer in polls," Mr. Jindal can sound like Mr. Bush.

I’ve met Bobby several times. I liked him from the start. You can bet that he’s not soft on illegal immigration.

Jindal: 'I'm exactly where I need to be'

Obama: "I'm the One we've been waiting for."

Mr. Obama, I profoundly disagree with you...

I love the sound of this guy. Rather than (like Obama) immediately shooting for a higher officer even after you’ve just started the current one-—Bobby is focused on doing his job!! Kudos, Bobby, kudos! You are prime future presidential material.

NO, no, Jindal should be in this presidential race. This guy is one of the best candidates and is so far above the others in intellectual potential it is stunning. He makes obama look like a racist idiot, hillary like the arkansas buffoon, and McCain like a good, but ageing, veteran.

Considering how badly recent elections have gone it almost seems surprising that Jindal managed to win at all. He is one bright spot in an otherwise dismal season for Republicans. I think he will definitely be talked up as a candidate for 2012 or ‘16, assuming he is successful as governor.

Everything I've heard and read about Jindal impresses me. But I don't want to see him on a ticket with McCain not only because he needs a full term as governor for resume enhancement but because if McCain actually wins, the Republicans are going to get blamed for his harebrained "reaching out" to everybody but conservatives schemes.

Bobby is just the kind of good arms we are going to need in the bullpen to clean up the mess.

I’ve said it several times on several threads. Jindal is too smart to tie his star to McCain’s anchor.

I agree. Leave Bobby right where he is. While it would be a real feather in Louisiana’s cap to have our governor in such a prominent national role.

But wouldn’t that mean that the Lt. Gov. would then take over, namely Mitch Landrieu, brother of Mary Landrieu? That would definitely not be good for our state.

I think Bobby Jindal kicks ass. I hope he doesn’t taint himself by closely associating too much with McLame.

People talk like Charlie Crist is a great governor/politician/Republican. Balderdash. Bobby Jindal is the future.

(Joe: sent to you so FLORIDA FREEPers can look with “governor envy” at Louisiana! :) )

Yep, can’t have that happen either! We finally see light at the end of the tunnel in LA and Lt. Gov Landrieu to Gov. Landrieu would just be business as usual.

Bitsy, if he becomes president he will do far more for LA. He is a rising star for the country.

I know. But, we are so desperate for change in politics as usual in LA and we finally see someone who can defeat the good old boys at every turn!!!
