Earth 'noise' could attract alien invaders

03 May 2008
From New Scientist Print Edition.

No matter how quiet we try to be now it's too late to prevent alien invaders. So says Alexander Zaitsev of the Institute of Radio Engineering and Electronics in Moscow, Russia, who points the finger at astronomers.

For 40 years, astronomers have fired microwaves off objects to chart near-Earth space and track the movement of close asteroids - and these signals are traceable back to us. By comparison, Zaitsev says, dedicated transmissions - often described as "shouting into an unknown jungle" - are a mere whisper. He calculates the astronomy signals have filled an area of the sky 2000 times greater than dedicated broadcasts have managed to date (www.arxiv.org/0804.2754).

The guy’s a moron. What are the chances that a civilization lasting long enough to develop faster-than-light interstellar travel would still be violent enough to want to conquer another planet?

I would not necessarily assume such a culture to be peaceful. Violent dictatorships can take over a world as we know and then keep on conquering.

er.....exactly. How is it MORE likely that advanced civilizations would be blood thirsty conquerers?

Sure, we can imagine pin-dancing angels all day but, all life, as we understand it, is root in warfare. It's pure Sci Fi to imagine a lifeform that doesn't evolve in an environment devoid of competition.

As competitive lifeforms become more advanced, the margin for survival of an aggressive civilization would likely become thinner and thinner.

I may be wildly wrong but if I have to use logic to choose between thinking that alien races would be conquerers rather than being driven by scientific curiosity, I'm going to choose the curious. As a long-term strategy, curiosity is more survivable than aggression.

Besides, it's unlikely we'd have anything to offer an alien race: our biosphere would probably be deadly to them.

What garbage. Assume there are hostile aiens out there. Recent developments in physics show that diffusion effects wash out EM signals within a couple lght years of Earth. That means there is nothing decipherable or even detecable at Alpha Centuri. Research also pretty much busted the whole search for intelligent extraterrestial life (SERI) project.

Their view of the Universe may be totally different. We (of course) have no idea how their brain evolved, how many lobes they possess, if any, do they remotely have a similar tension between the frontal lobes and the R complex, etc.

Are they like the Krell? Can any being truly escape its ancient past?

There’s only one thing I’d venture past the 50/50 mark: if they have the wherewithal to get here, we will be totally at their mercy. Either they will or they won’t make us a nice pâté.

"I have another question. What are the best, ie most serious scientific websites dealing with the UFO phenomenom out there?"

This one
http://www.ufoskeptic.org/
An information site on the UFO phenomenon by and for professional scientists. Authored by Bernard Haisch a respected, established astrophysicist.

It's very interesting! I think it's just what you are looking for.

Gore is g-d. He killed manberpig. (1/2 man - 1/2 bear - 1/2 pig).

map shows all 32 star systems within 14 light-years of Sol. Some are stacked meaning two or three stars in a system.

That is a good point. It would have to be a highly concentrated microwave beam pointed directly at a star system. Even then it would be questionable if even Alpha Centauri could decipher the wave if someone is there to listen.

UFO skeptic? Sounds like they’ve determined the conclusion already. If you don’t believe UFOs exist, and I don’t know what they are, you must read Jacques Vallee.

Is there a way to see how many of those have suns about the same size and age as ours?

Oh the name of the site is misleading. The site is skeptical of the skeptics! It's a good site. Go there you will like it. I think UFO's are real. I have no idea what they are but SOMETHING is going on! UFO study is a side hobby of mine. I think it so curious.
