Case of polygamist sect raises values dilemma

The disturbing child abuse case unfolding in Texas raises difficult questions about two ideals we hold dear: Religious freedom and child safety.

The state of Texas has been criticized by church members, lawyers and civil liberties groups for removing all of the children from a polygamist compound following a raid by Child Protective Services.

...But doesn't the state have an obligation to protect these young women, even if they say marriage and pregnancy at 16 is what they believe in and want? Statutory rape is OK under the guise of religion? ....

there are only 17 boys 14 to 17 years old, compared with the 53 girls in that age range.

How can that be? And why? < / sarcasm >

On Tuesday, a spokesman for the Texas Child Protective Services said that nearly 60 percent of the underage girls taken in the raid have children or are pregnant. Of the 53 girls between the age of 14 and 17 who are in custody, 31 have either given birth or are expecting.

“where are all the FLDS / Mormon apologists ?(insert crisket noise here)”

That would be “rule of law” apologists. But, hey, the case looks proven to me. Somebody needs to go to jail. This thing needs to be broken up.

I’m not a lawyer but the state is going to have to carefully explain how the whole thing went down without any “magic” in the middle. A train of logic and probable cause from front to back.

If they can do that I’ll be as satisfied as anybody. I don’t like special rules for religious minorities.

The lost boys, thrown out of US sect so that older men can marry more wives

Up to 1,000 teenage boys have been separated from their parents and thrown out of their communities by a polygamous sect to make more young women available for older men, Utah officials claim.

Many of these "Lost Boys", some as young as 13, have simply been dumped on the side of the road in Arizona and Utah, by the leaders of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (FLDS), and told they will never see their families again or go to heaven...

ISLAMIC MORMONISM

An Irreverent Essay

The Coincidental Similarities
Between Islam and Mormonism

By

John R. Llewellyn
Copyright 2003

excerpt:

The similarities between Islam and Mormonism may be much more than coincidence. There is a strong indication that Joseph may have studied Islam, just as he studied Masonry, Judaism and Catholicism, and incorporated bits and pieces of all four religions into Mormonism. Consider the following quote:

If the people will let us alone, we will preach the gospel in peace. But if they come on us to molest us, we will establish our religion by the sword. We will trample down our enemies and make it one gore of blood from the Rocky Mountains to the Atlantic Ocean. I will be to this generation a second Mohammed, whose motto in treating for peace was “the Alcoran [Qar’an] or the Sword.” So shall it eventually be with us — “Joseph Smith or the Sword!”[17]

First of all, these FLDS folks are NOT Mormons and you know it very well. The FLDS decided in 1890 to go on their merry way, to heck with the true Church.

Apparently, you trust, believe and love the authorities in the State of Texas who rounded up all the children at gunpoint. You apprently think it’s OK to crap on the Constitution, going in with a tank, on a false report. Apparently, you think the children should be probed, poked, strip searched, emotional traumatized, and ripped right out of their mother’s arms while all the FLDS MEN walk around free as birds.

There had to be a better way.

So . . . now that this precedent has been set, let’s go round up all the children produced by teenage girls impregnated by older men - I mean the ones that survived abortion. These men can then roam around free, too.

Quit shedding tears for these sorry mothers, who have their sons dumped on the side of the road like unwanted dogs, because they are too brainwashed by this cult to care about their sons’ well-being. They are definitely unfit mothers. This is expected behavior in the animal kingdom, but not for human beings.

Most animals instintively care for their young. Humans have this characteristic too, unless it is squashed. We have read stories about women who just knew they had to get the kids out. All were raised the same. How come a few, knew better?

The FLDS decided in 1890 to go on their merry way, to heck with the true Church.

No, they didn't. There wasn't any official break-off until the mid-1930s. Up until then they were just fundamentally Mormon--like all the fundamentalist Mormons going back to Joseph Smith.

Apparently, you think the children should be probed, poked, strip searched, emotional traumatized, and ripped right out of their mother’s arms while all the FLDS MEN walk around free as birds.

Apparently, you think the young female teens should have a mock "wedding" conducted for them in the temple, that they should "probed" by something millions of times more invasive than what a medical doc would normally do, poked by a leering letch of a 50 yo man, stripped for her forced "rape camp honeymoon," emotionally traumatized for life--sometimes beyond recovery--spiritually and emotionally--and ripped right out of their mother's arms as a young girl to become "one flesh" with a man and his six other women, while all the fLDS men don't come to the "rescue" of their "wives" and children like real men would do...by matching whom with whom...and instead retreat for whatever little freedom they can scrounge up until they are charged.

Disguising a corrupt and perverted organization as a religion is a pretty good racket. Ask Mohammed. Once it gets rolling, it's darn hard to stop.

There was no tank in use. The F(lds) are just as much Mormons as today's RLDS and the LDS.

All the folks who use the Book of Mormon and trace their origins to Joseph Smith are Mormons.

Out here in the evil Non-Mormon World we know the difference.

You may not know that we know such things but we do. That's because we're smart and know how to read.

I believe you used the term "true church" once in response to me. Not being a Mormon I don't particularly care which of the lebenteenzeven and a half gazillion Mormon sects is the true one or the fake one.

On the other hand the State of Texas had a problem with a bunch of child abusing shack job honies and their boyfriends. Time to clean up that mess.

I watched an episode of “The Secret Lives of Women” on the WE network the other night. It was about these polygamist women, and profiled a few who had escaped and are devoting their lives to ending this cult. They ones who remain are absolutely brainwashed, abused, and terrified. They have no sense of self. Many younger wives are kept in control by the older “sister wives”, who will abuse their children in order to keep them in line. They are also not allowed to show any physical affection for their children — no holding or cuddling! The end result is a community of robots. So although I am angry at many for perpetuating this, I know many more are simply terrified, ignorant, and helpless. Pray for them!

..that’s the real problem IMO. Just as the muslim ‘extremists’ claim THEY they are practising the REAL islam, so do the FLDS claim THEY are the true Mormons.

Both are cults to begin with. There are muslims who want to live ordinary lives and who are shunned by the ‘true believers’ that follow sharia and want to spread sharia throughout the world.

Just as the FLDS shun the mainstream Mormons and want to control their people totally, FLDS appears to me to have much in common with sharia law.

Ultimately, what the FLDS appears to have done is set themselves apart from all the rules and regulations of modern society - such as birth and death certificates, normal family relationships, accountability to the laws of the land.

I feel sorry for the mainstream mormon church. But FLDS is an offshoot from the same trunk and they have to take responsibility, just as we demand islam takes responsibility for the terrorism it fosters.
