Minnesota madrassa officials attack news crew
May 20, 2008

The state Education Department on Monday directed a Minnesota charter school to "correct" two areas related to religion at the school.

Tarik ibn Zayad Academy, which focuses on Middle Eastern culture and shares a mosque with the Muslim American Society of Minnesota, came under fire after a teacher alleged that the school was offering religious instruction in Islam to its students. "The Minnesota Department of Education goes to great lengths to make clear to charter schools and their sponsors that, while schools should appropriately accomodate students' religious beliefs, they must be 'nonsectarian' under the state's charter school law," said the state's education Deputy Commissioner Chas Anderson.

The allegations first surfaced after an article by a columnist for the Star Tribune. The Education Department subsequently began a review of the suburban Inver Grove Heights school and released its findings Monday. The agency said it was concerned about the school, with about 300 students, accommodating communal prayer and providing transportation to an after-school religious program. "We have directed the school to take appropriate corrective actions regarding these matters and will continue to provide oversight to ensure that the school is in compliance with state and federal law," Anderson said.

In an attempt to report about the new findings from the Department of Education, 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS went to TiZA. While on school grounds, our crew was attacked by school officials. The two men were able to grab our camera and kept it until police arrived. Our photographer was treated by paramedics after suffering minor injuries. Notice the Moslem clothes the children wear and how the photographer was attacked and camera goes black. This is a Public School paid for by your tax money.

Islamofascist Intimidation at Columbus State
Wednesday, May 21, 2008

What began as a peaceful screening of the documentary, “Obsession: Radical Islam’s War Against the West”, Monday afternoon at Columbus (Ohio) State Community College turned to shouts and intimidation as Muslim students confronted students in attendance and Islamofascism Awareness Week event organizers. The video screening was part of Columbus State’s Islamofascism Awareness Week activities hosted by the campus chapter of the Terrorism Awareness Project (TAP), which runs through Wednesday.

According to TAP president Josiah Lanning, commotion began during the first screening of the documentary film and continued to escalate throughout the afternoon. According to Lanning, an individual who identified himself as an Iraqi Muslim began loudly arguing with audience members. After continuing to disrupt the discussion period following the screening, the individual complained that the group was allowed to show the film and warned Lanning not to show the film again.

Three screenings of the Fox News documentary, “Jihad USA: Homegrown Terror” are planned for today (Tuesday), and screenings of both “Obsession” and “Jihad USA” planned for Wednesday afternoon.

Rancid Fanatic is Featured Campus Speaker for the Muslim Students Association
Wednesday, May 21, 2008

If an organization stood accused of supporting a fanatical religious movement that seeks to create a global empire wherein women are oppressed, homosexuals are executed, and all faiths other than Islam are expressly outlawed, would that group try to discredit such accusations by providing a public forum for an individual who proudly and vocally embraces precisely those ideals? Yes, if that organization was the Muslim Students Association (MSA), which recently commissioned a religious bigot and apologist for terror named Sheikh Khalid Yasin to speak on its behalf.

During the first week of April, the MSA invited Yasin to appear at five college campuses -- Minnesota State University, St. Cloud State University, Sinclair Community College, the University of Minnesota, and Washington State University -- to rebut charges about the organization’s countenance of religious bigotry and Islamic terror.

Feds: W. Pa doctor sent assets to Lebanon during bankruptcy
05/21/2008

GREENSBURG — Federal prosecutors say a Westmoreland County doctor charged with illegally selling painkiller prescriptions for cash hid $275,000 in a Lebanese bank while under bankruptcy protection. A federal grand jury has indicted 62-year-old Dr. Antoine Cawog, of Greensburg, on two counts of money laundering. They say he deposited $150,000 in the overseas bank in June 2004 and another $125,000 in July 2004 while he was in bankruptcy.

Records show the doctor had previously filed for Chapter 11 protection. It is illegal for people under bankruptcy protection to hide assets from the court. A woman who answered Cawog's home phone and identified herself as his wife says the charges are "lies" and that he won't comment. State prosecutors last month charged Cawog with selling prescriptions to patients without proper exams.

Philippines film piracy 'funding' militants
5/21/08

Al-Qaeda linked Islamic militants are suspected to be behind rampant intellectual piracy in the Philippines. The Optical Media Board chairman Edu Manzano, says the Abu Sayyaf - blamed for the worst terrorist attacks in the South-East Asian country - are likely behind the illegal copying of movies onto DVDS, which are then peddled at Manila shops by migrant Muslim traders.

The government agency has been cracking down on the trade, but Mr Manzano said that this has not yet stemmed the tide of counterfeits. Mr Manzano said many armed groups around the world traffic in counterfeits to raise funds, and the Abu Sayyaf would be no exception. "In the same way that the Yakuza are behind them in Japan and the Hezbollah are involved in [counterfeiting] the Middle East, they [Abu Sayyaf] are suspected of this," he said. Although the Government lacks "documentary evidence" linking the Abu Sayyaf to the trade, Mr Manzano said recent raids on suspected intellectual pirates in Manila's Muslim communities have turned up counterfeit DVDs and fake luxury goods packaged with illegal drugs, grenades and even mercury.

“Suicide, the path to national salvation”
By AMNON RUBINSTEIN

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “THIS MAY sound like an extreme conclusion but, as Ari Bar Yossef, retired lieutenant-colonel and administrator of the Knesset’s Security Committee, writes in the army journal Ma’arachot, such cases of Islamist national suicide are not uncommon. He cites three such examples of Arab-Muslim regimes irrationally sacrificing their very existence, overriding their instinct of self-preservation, to fight the perceived enemy to the bitter end.

• The first case is that of Saddam Hussein, who in 2003 could have avoided war and conquest by allowing UN inspectors to search for (the apparently non-existent) weapons of mass destruction wherever they wanted. Yet Iraq’s ruler opted for war, knowing full well that he would have to face the might of the US.

• The second case is that of Yasser Arafat in 2000, who after the failure of the Camp David and Taba talks had two options: continue talking to Israel - under the leadership of Ehud Barak, this country’s most moderate and flexible government ever - or resort to violence. He chose the latter, with the result that all progress toward Palestinian independence was blocked. The ensuing loss of life, on both sides, testified to Arafat’s preference for suicide over compromise.

• The third case is that of the Taliban. Post-9/11, their leadership had two options: to enter into negotiations with the US, with a view to extraditing Osama bin Laden, or to risk war and destruction. The choice they made was obvious: Better to die fighting than to give up an inch.

IN ALL three cases, the conclusion is plain: prolonged war, death, destruction and national suicide are preferable to peaceful solutions of conflicts: Dying is preferable to negotiating with infidels. The same conclusion, of course, is applicable to the Palestinians voting for Hamas and its suicidal path, and to Iran’s decision to confront the Security Council in its insistence on acquiring nuclear weapons.

These cases, while unprecedented in the annals of history, should not be that surprising. If you glorify individual suicide, if death is the key to a happy afterlife, if war itself is sanctified, why not extend these ideas from the individual to the collective? To the regime itself ? Suicide is the path to both individual and national salvation.

“Jihadi Website Interviews New Leader of Somalia’s Shabaab al-Mujahideen
By Abdul Hameed Bakier

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “On the eve of the fatal U.S. strike against Aden Hashi Ayro, leader of the Shabaab al-Mujahideen movement in Somalia, the electronic monthly magazine Echo of Jihad conducted an interview with Mukhtar Ali Robow, the ex-deputy minister of defense of Somalia’s Islamic Courts Union (ICU). Better known as Abu Mansur, the veteran militant is the spokesman for Shabaab al-Mujahideen as well as Ayro’s successor (alsomal.com, May 9). The interview was published as a special edition by the Global Islamic Media Front and posted in different pro-jihadist websites (shmo5alislam.net, May 8).”

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “In his interview with Echo of Jihad, Abu Mansur said that the “gates of jihad” are wide open in the Horn of Africa, which he describes as the third- or fourth-most important jihadist front defending Islam. Abu Mansur also declares the adherence of Somali jihadis to the Salafi-jihadist confession of Islam. Somali jihadis acquired two decades of jihadi experience in different types of jihad, describing their efforts as “the jihad against the apostates” and “jihad against regimes aiding the Crusaders’ proxy war against Muslims.” Abu Mansur enumerates the achievements of the Somali jihadis as follows:”

Insurgent group says the alleged head of al-Qaida in Somalia killed in airstrike
Star Tribune ^ | May 1, 2008 | MOHAMED OLAD HASSAN ap
Posted on April 30, 2008 11:55:28 PM PDT by mdittmar

MOGADISHU, Somalia - The man believed to be the head of al-Qaida in Somalia was killed in an overnight airstrike along with eight other people, an Islamic insurgent group said Thursday.

The spokesman for the Islamic al-Shabab militia, Sheik Muqtar Robow, said the strike killed Aden Hashi Ayro, his brother and seven others at his house in the central Somali town of Dusamareeb, about 300 miles north of Mogadishu. Six more people were wounded.

“Our brother martyr Aden Hashi, has received what he was looking for — death for the sake of Allah — at the hands of the United States,” Robow told The Associated Press by phone.

“This would not deter us from continuing our holy war against Allah’s enemy; we will be on the right way, that is why we are targeted. I call for our holy fighters to remain strong in their position and keep up the jihad,” he added.

It was not immediately clear who was behind the airstrike.

Over the past year, the U.S. military has attacked several suspected extremists in Somalia, most recently in March when the U.S. Navy fired at least one missile into a southern Somali town.

Somali government officials have said Ayro trained in Afghanistan before the Sept. 11, 2001 terror attacks and is the head of al-Qaida’s cell in Somalia.

He was a key figure in the al-Shabab movement, which aims to impose Islamic law and launches daily attacks on the shaky Somali government and their Ethiopian allies. Ayro also recently called for attacks on African peacekeepers in Somalia in a recording on an Islamic Web site.

Local resident Nur Geele said the attack occurred around 3 a.m.

Three Aid Workers Kidnapped in Somalia
More trouble out of Somalia (via AFP):

MOGADISHU (AFP) — Gunmen kidnapped three aid workers — two Italians and a Somali — in Somalia’s Lower Shabelle region on Wednesday, the latest in a string of attacks against humanitarian groups, officials told AFP.

“Three aid workers, among them two Italians, a man and a woman, were kidnapped early this morning by armed men who blindfolded them and took them away,” local elder Mohamed Ibrahim Ali told AFP.

A local security official confirmed the kidnapping and said the security forces were trying to locate the hostages.

“We are currently investigating who kidnapped them and where they were taken,” Ali Mohamed Gele told AFP.

The kidnapping took place at around 6:30 a.m. (0330 GMT) in the village of Awdhegle, 70 kilometres (45 miles) south of the capital Mogadishu.

The three who were abducted all worked for an Italian non-governmental organisation called Cooperazione Italiana Nord Sud (CINS), or North-South Italian Cooperation, both officials said.

The elder said the non-Italian hostage was Abderahman Yusuf Arale, the local head of the Italian aid group.

In Rome, a foreign ministry spokesman confirmed the kidnapping of the two Italians.

“We are in contact with their families and we are following the situation with much attention,” the spokesman said.

Somalia is notorious for the lack of protection provided to aid workers. Gunmen abducted Dr. Murray Watson and Patrick Amukhuma last month as they worked on a flood control project, and in 2007, food shipments to Somalia were temporarily halted after the head of the UN World Food Program was kidnapped and held captive for 6 days. Throw in the pirates lurking off the coast, and it takes an extraordinary amount of dedication to volunteer to go there.

Prayers for the safe return of these hostages, and continued prayers for the well-being and rescue of Dr. Watson and Mr. Amukhuma, who have not been heard from since their April 1 abduction.

UPDATE: The NGO employing the 3 aid workers has been able to speak to them today (via Khaleej Times):
The Rome-based group, Cooperazione Italiana Nord Sud (CINS), said it had been able to speak with hostages Iolanda Occhipinti, Giuliano Paganini and Abderahman Yusuf Arale.

“CINS has made an initial contact with the three volunteers who said they were well and had not suffered any violence,” the aid group said on its Web site http://cins.pettigna.com .

“Petraeus: U.S. Troops in Iraq Likely To Blunt Iran’s Influence”
By Anne Flaherty, Associated Press
CNSNews.com
May 21, 2008

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Washington (AP) - Army Gen. David Petraeus, who is to assume control of U.S. forces in the Middle East, says that a continued U.S. presence in Iraq is more likely to blunt, rather than inflame, Iran’s growing influence in the region.

In a 46-page question-and-answer document submitted in advance of his confirmation hearing on Thursday, Petraeus says the U.S. must work on developing more leverage _ primarily diplomatic or economic _ to pressure Tehran to abandon its nuclear program. But, he notes, the U.S. must retain military strike options as a “last resort.”

“A destabilized Iraq, rampant terrorism in the region and a nuclear-armed Middle East are not in any nation’s long-term interest, including Iran’s,” according to the document, obtained by The Associated Press.”

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “More than one out of every three positions in an elite FBI division that tracks al Qaeda terrorists is vacant, according to an internal bureau document. Efforts are under way at the FBI to canvass for “volunteers” to fill what the agency said is a “critical” need in its counterterrorism efforts.

A senior bureau official said yesterday that because of significant staffing shortages and a lack of experienced managers, the FBI cannot properly defend the United States against “another catastrophic and direct attack by Middle Eastern terrorists.”

Bassem Youssef, chief of the communications analysis unit of the FBI’s counterterrorism division, said the bureau’s International Terrorism Operations Sections (ITOS) — which include those that track al Qaeda terrorists — are “inexcusably understaffed.””

Coalition forces capture weapons smuggler, kidnapper in outskirts of Baghdad

BAGHDAD – Coalition forces furthered their degradation of the Special Groups criminal element Thursday, after capturing six suspected outlaws during simultaneous operations around Baghdad.

Coalition forces targeted an alleged weapons smuggler and kidnapper wanted for supplying lethal aid to outlaws in the Shu’la area of Baghdad. The individual is suspected of supplying anti-Iraqi forces with small arms and rockets.

Coalition forces approached the suspected criminal’s residence, where he identified himself to be the wanted individual. Forces detained him without incident.

About 8 kilometers northeast of Baghdad in the town of J’far Ghanawi, Coalition Forces detained another criminal, wanted for kidnapping and other violent crimes against Iraqis. The targeted individual is believed to be personally responsible for the kidnapping, torture and murder of numerous Iraqis over the past year.

The force moved in on the suspected outlaw’s location where they detained him and four other suspected criminals without incident. Coalition forces found numerous weapons including AK-47s, grenades and improvised explosive device-making materials in the outlaw’s residence.

“Coalition forces are affecting the criminals’ ability to destabilize Iraq by taking Special Groups leadership off the streets,” said Maj. John Hall, MNF-I spokesman.

Soldiers from 4th Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, found a weapons cache at approximately 12:05 p.m. in the Kamaliya area of New Baghdad. Soldiers discovered 16 mortar charges; 26 shotgun shells; a rocket-propelled-grenade launcher scope; an RPG round and 35, 5.56mm rounds.

At approximately 1:30 p.m. in Kadhamiyah, Iraqi Army Soldiers from 5th Battalion, 22nd Brigade, 6th IA Division, found a 155mm artillery round rigged to be used as an improvised-explosive device; an RPG round; five AK-47s; a 60mm mortar tube with bipod; 1,000, 7.62mm rounds and several electric components.

A Sons of Iraq member alerted Soldiers from 4th BCT, 10th Mtn. Div., about a weapons cache in the Umar area of Rusafa at approximately 1:30 p.m. The Soldiers seized three 60mm mortar rounds; two 82mm mortar rounds; an RPG launcher with an RPG attached; an AK-47 and two fuses.

At approximately 2 p.m. in the Karkh district, IA Soldiers from the 1st Battalion, 22nd Brigade, 6th IA Div., found a vehicle rigged with more than 80 pounds of explosives to be used as a car bomb. The IA Soldiers cordoned off the area to safeguard innocent locals.

The car detonated 15 minutes later, apparently as a result of terrorists realizing that the IAs had discovered the vehicle they were planning to use to kill innocent Iraqis. No one was injured as a result of the explosion.

Soldiers from 2nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, found two Katusha rockets and two rocket tubes west of Baghdad at approximately 5 p.m.

“The professional Soldiers of Multi-National Division – Baghdad and the Iraq Army continue to combine their efforts in taking these dangerous weapons off the streets of Baghdad,” said Col. Allen Batschelet, chief of staff, MND-B and the 4th Infantry Division. “They are vigilant in safeguarding the Iraqi people.”
