Saving Harry Reid?

It is not just that Democrats sensed that a chance to pick up a vulnerable House seat in Nevada could be slipping through their fingers. And it’s not just that they couldn’t bear to have a little-known openly gay accountant who moved to Nevada just three years ago as their standard bearer in a heavily Mormon district.

No, the reason House Speaker Nancy Pelosi herself was on the telephone line last Thursday beckoning – begging? — State Senate Minority Leader Dina Titus to enter the race for Nevada’s 3rd congressional district was more significant.

It’s because if the Democrats can’t defeat Republican Representative Jon Porter this fall in a district where they now have a lead of 22,500 voter registrants, Mr. Porter may seek to challenge the 2010 re-election hopes of Senator Harry Reid.

Mr. Reid is, of course, the Senate majority leader. He picked up the title after his predecessor, Tom Daschle, lost his Senate seat in 2004. In Nevada, he’s also the only Democrat to win a statewide race for senator, governor or lieutenant governor since 1994.

All of those facts had the Democrats in the Silver State and nationally scrambling for a viable opponent for Mr. Porter after their favored candidate, former assistant district attorney Robert Daskas, suddenly pulled out on April 28 with two weeks until the filing deadline.

Mrs. Titus, a 57-year-old political science professor at University of Nevada Las Vegas, is the failed Democratic candidate for governor in 2006. But Democratic leaders believe they have in her Mr. Porter’s match.

What was it that Harry Reid told school children President Bush was? I think it was loser. It seems Reid is worried.

Actually, even though he is scowling, Harry Reid looks better in that photo than in real life.

Much as I dislike Nancy Pelosi, I can imagine that she might be fun to talk to at a cocktail party, if you managed to forget everything she stands for.

What the appeal of Harry Reid is, I have never understood. He is one of the sourest-looking, most disagreeable, stupidest human beings I have ever witnessed. There are hundreds of more attractive leftist politicians out there. What on earth possessed the voters of Nevada to elect him?

Is Jimmy Carter’s son still available? He ran for Senate in Nevada but lost.

At one time, Harry Reid was the up and coming DA from Clark County who was credited with cleaning up the mob influence in gambling in the state. Before he because majority leader, his voting record was actually to the right of RINOs like Arlen Specter. His winning margin has never been great and has been padded by people fleeing California and probably crossover Mormons, a normally conservative demographic which makes up about one-fifth of the Nevada electorate. Against well-known candidates (one of whom is now the junior senator John Ensign), his margin has been less than 1,000 votes statewide.

Fancy Nancy has cause to be worried about her Nancy Boy.

I have met Nancy Pelosi in a social setting....and no, she isn’t. She’s as annoying off camera as on - completely and utterly full of herself.

It seems like this is a good challenge for John McCain, Mitt Romney, and any and all Western Republicans.

Every far left Senator which doesn't have a far left constituency has some compelling story to explain why they get elected. Pennsylvania's rubber stamp Bob Casey is no exception. His father was a well-known moderate and staunchly pro-life governor who was excluded from speaking at the 1992 Democrat convention by the Clintons. Which explains his backing of Obama, even though his home territory in the northeast part of the state voted for Hillary by about 70-30 in last week's primary here.

McCain actually ran behind Ron Paul in the Nevada caucus. This was after he won in New Hampshire and was definitely on the radar screen. A lot of observers were too quick to dismiss McCain's showing there to the Mormon factor. But the reality is that they are only 1/5th of the electorate in Nevada and about 1/30th of the electorate in Colorado where McCain fared even worse even though he was the clear front-runner by this time with the South Carolina and Florida wins.

The reality is that a lot of westerners do not like McCain, even though he is one of them and a lot of them like Romney, even though he is an easterner. I don't know how to explain it other than the fact that McCain delights in p***ing on the conservative base whereas Romney treated them with courtesy, even though he ain't exactly a conservative.

Since when do filing deadlines matter to democRats? If it looks like they are going to lose, then a couple of weeks before the election they will get the democRat to drop out so a federal judge can allow them to substitute in a more viable candidate.
