FLDS doctor denies abuse at YFZ Ranch |

The physician who cares for the polygamous community now in the national spotlight - and who has treated its prophet in a Utah jail - is described by his mentor as "very kind, very sensitive, very concerned." Lloyd H. Barlow, a member of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, graduated from the University of Utah's School of Medicine in 1995. He completed a one-year internship in internal medicine in 1996, and then did a family medicine residency at the U. that ended in 1999. Barlow oversees a health clinic in Hildale, the sect's traditional home base, and its Texas clinic at its YFZ Ranch. Texas authorities allege there is a pattern of sexual abuse of underage girls at the ranch; and on Wednesday an official said at least 41 children there have had broken bones. He also said young boys may have been sexually abused. Barlow flatly denies that any child abuse occurred at the ranch. "There is not," Barlow said. "The parents are very loving and caring parents, as I believe [Texas child welfare officials] could attest given the stresses put on them over the past three weeks and observing them. The parents are very much interested in the care and well-being of their children." He added: "It is part of our belief system that the way to teach and train children is to deal with them and train them in kindness." Physicians are legally required to report cases of suspected child abuse - something Barlow said he would have done if he found such evidence. Texas authorities would not comment Wednesday on whether investigations include whether anyone failed to report abuse of children at the ranch. Barlow said children with serious illnesses or injuries were treated at health care facilities outside the ranch, and police found receipts for such care, court records show. There have been no public complaints against Barlow or discipline by licensors in Utah or Texas. Physician Marc E. Babitz was Barlow's faculty supervisor during his residency program and worked with him at a now-closed family practice clinic in Salt Lake City. "He was really a very fine student and a very fine resident. He put the welfare of his patients as his top priority," said Babitz, who once visited Barlow at the Hildale clinic. He said he was once introduced to one of Barlow's wives. Until Barlow completed his medical degree, Hildale and the adjoining FLDS town of Colorado City, Ariz., had a single nurse practitioner to rely on. "He made a huge difference to health care in this area," said Joanne Yarrish, a certified nurse midwife in nearby Centennial Park. Barlow repeatedly visited then-ailing sect leader Warren S. Jeffs in the Washington County jail in the spring of 2007. Jeffs was awaiting trial and was later convicted of two first-degree felony counts of rape as an accomplice for his role in a 2001 spiritual marriage between a 14-year-old follower and her 19-year-old cousin. --- * JULIA LYON contributed to this report. |
“One, do you equate the CPS with the police”
Nope. But the CPS does notify the police, and take them with them when they go in to remove children.
Same Question. The Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, and it took the U.S. five years to actually ‘go to war’.
WHY DID THEY TAKE SO LONG?
” And who did the police arrest for rape and murder? “
At the FLDS compound? (I assume that’s what you mean).
They weren’t there to arrest anyone. First, remove the children who are in danger. Then, you go after evidence, and if you find it, you prepare your case, get arrest warrants, and then you arrest someone.
When that happens, I am sure we all will be notified by the media.
He has said that compound residents have been treated at outside hospitals when injuries or illnesses are too serious to treat at his clinic. I’d certainly take that with a grain of salt (or a bag of rock salt) as far as concerns obviously underage girls with serious pregnancy or childbirth complications, and children or women with injuries indicating criminal abuse.
“Just the old FAMILY tree....(snort!)”
Well, that would get boring, quick. What with only one branch.
He did question me about my wallet which he saw when I was getting my driver's license. It looked similar to this one, with "Officer's Wife" imprinted below a replica of my husband's official badge:
Bragging? I volunteer for Search and Rescue and I play paintball with the cops. Us old guys like to show the younger ones who's boss : )
I will let you in on a little secret. If the powers that be don't like you, they will get you, it may take a long time but time is on their side. Whether it is denying a building permit, tax assessments, taxes, grand jury investigations, etc. Targeted individuals don't last long. A Detective friend of mine is absolutely convinced that he could get dirt on anyone, even Mother Teresa.
The RLDS are clearly a vilified and targeted group, and just Like Al Capone they are going down, one way or another. The State has possession of the kids and in a couple of months of less the kids will be dancing to any tune the State plays.
Odd view of history that you have if you think that Midway, Bataan, Germany, etc. don't constitute going to war. The authorities have had more than 5 years to investigate this group, if that was enough time to practically win a World War surely it is enough time to put these people behind bars, or at least arrest one of them.
They werent there to arrest anyone. First, remove the children who are in danger. Then, you go after evidence, and if you find it, you prepare your case, get arrest warrants, and then you arrest someone.
Your sequence almost makes me nauseous. Don't you think that they should have evidence first before they remove the children?
With your procedure they could take anyones children and then look for evidence later to justify taking the children. Do you have any idea of what a fishing expedition is?
On second thought maybe you are right. The CPS should just go into everyones house, take the children (all children are in danger) and then take months and years to compile evidence against the parents. That would eliminate undesirables in less than a generation. The State would make a much better parent anyway.
Do I need a sarcasm tag? I no longer assume that sarcasm is recognizable anymore.
Yeah, Much as I like my family doctor, he’ll be the first to admit that he’s not capable of dealing with many emergency situations.
Seems like if Barlow really wanted to be qualified to deal with the kinds of things he’d be facing, some years in a trauma center would have been better suited for him than a family practice stint.
And there are the issues you pointed out as well.
Uh, your first comment. Goes to complexity.
Texas changed the law on consent in 2005 in direct response to Jeffs and his L.I.C. (Loyal Inner Circle), along with his pets.(the women and children).
That was step one.
Step two was an insider.
However, he was unable to gain access to temple records, which were needed to identify relationships, birthdates, etc.
Step three was regular visits by the CPS.
Step four was visits from the State Welfare.
State Welfare made a complaint to CPS that they saw child abuse.
Step five was statements from women and children who had escaped.
Step six was a referral from the abuse hotline.
Step seven was a referral from the abuse hotline (the hoax call)
Step eight was the first search warrant.
Step nine was the second search warrant.
Step ten was removal of the children.
Step eleven was a custody ruling for the children.
The State of Texas, the LE, Welfare, and CPS have been working hard on this case for four years, and finally they were able to justify removing the children until the dangerous environment could be eliminated.
The Judge specifically referred to ‘dangerous environment’.
“Don’t you think that they should have evidence first before they remove the children?”
I think the reason you think we differ on this is the word ‘evidence’.
You are talking about evidence proving an older man had sex with a girl.
I am talking about evidence that someone had sex with a girl (meaning minor).
The CPS only needs to see signs of child abuse to take action. They don’t need to know WHO, until it comes time to return the child to someone. Then it matters.
I know, I know. So why didn’t they take action, if they had seen the abuse before?
What makes you think they haven’t tried?
“With your procedure they could take anyones children and then look for evidence later to justify taking the children.”
They spent four years getting evidence, enough to convince a judge, to justify taking the children.
And, yet, they are accused of making wild accusations based on a hoax phone call.
You can’t have it both ways. If you want to know why it took them so long to get the proof, you can’t claim they acted without any.
“Do I need a sarcasm tag?”
Surely, you jest.
“Do you have any idea of what a fishing expedition is?”
You must have missed this:

Theyre just on a fishing expedition.
Well, if so, its because the pond is overstocked with inbred fish who are sick.
Its because there are Legal Arms of the State of Texas with regulation fishing poles, and they have been given a license to fish, at that pond. And their boat was registered too.

But my opinion of them is irrelevant.
HEY! Youre not playing fair!
If I cant bait you out of your opinion, how can I beat you over the head with it?
(Bait...fishing expedition...see how smoothly I snuck that in)

What possible motivation, other than legitimate concern, would any State or Local LE/CPS have for taking into custody 500 women and children, requiring food, shelter, lawyers, medical care etc., etc.,???
Who needs the rotten publicity, the inconvenience and the expense?
All these “Constitutional conspiracty poobahs” need to use some common sense.
LOL
I can imagine 2 scenarios—
Scenario one, little information is given out and certain people scream “What are they hiding?!!”
Scenario two, information is giving out and those same people scream “Pure politics! They are feeling the heat!!”
Sounds no win to me.

You don’t like your cop buddies very much do you?

It is all relative. If they came to take away my children I would develop an instant and intense hatred for them. If they were taking away your children I would commiserate with them on how awful dealing with domestic abuse is :)
I guess I should note that the last sentence was sarcastic. I really don't like seeing anyones Rights violated, even if it is for the children.
You don’t seem to have much respect for your friends, that’s all I was pointing out.

I re-watched the WE Network documentary last night, and it occurs to me that it’s possible the fLDS wasn’t really interested in medical treatment as we would think of it. They seem to view illness as a sort of proof of sin. One woman (the one married to the current leader of the YFZ) said her husband wanted her to let her son die, as he was somehow a shame to him. When she was ill with her (8!!!) pregnancies, everyone shunned her because they believed it was proof that she had sinned.
Well said, sodpoodle. Can you imagine that the state would actually WANT this new burden? And for what—the chance to exercise their latest techniques in jackbooted thuggery?
In my opinion, there are a lot of people who support the fLDS on FR—not the Constitution, because if they were truly concerned with the Constitution, they’d want it to apply to the women and children in that compound just as it does to the rest of us. If they honestly wanted due process, they’d rejoice in the fact that the fLDS got due process and then some. No, this is something else. Either they are fLDS, or they have admiration for the kind of lifestyle that permits what goes on there.
Sadly, blaming one’s illness as evidence of sin or lack of faith is not the sole property of this cult.
