am sitting in the shade of a big old Msasa tree writing this letter by hand because yet again the electricity is off.
It is a magnificent day so typical of early winter in Zimbabwe: a wide blue sky, comforting warm sun and a refreshing gentle breeze. Its hard to concentrate on telling this tragic story of events here when so many jewels are on display just a few feet away: a blue headed lizard nodding on a lichen covered branch; lines of red soil left by white ants climbing ever higher into the tree; bright orange crane flowers and an exquisite red firefinch collecting feathers and fluff for his nest. Its a deceptive paradise where violence rages just out of sight and final election results have still not been released four weeks after people voted. Its a paradise which can only momentarily take our minds off the nightmare that has become Zimbabwe.
What a disgraceful insult these 2008 elections have become to the people of Zimbabwe who have suffered so much, lost so much and yet have remained peaceful and turned the other cheek despite the most extreme provocation and deprivation.

I’ll be danged. Kathy Buckle is still alive.
Because they were unarmed and had no right to bear arms, so there was nothing else that they could do.
My guess is that the new gang will be pretty much like the old gang.
Probably just a bit of loyalty to an old friend.
It’s interesting that our Government refuses to give the white Africans and their families in general sanctuary for refugee status. I’ve argued against every neo-Nazi here, regardless of levels of subtleties in the implications in their speech, but the people of Dutch, English, etc. descents should get a pass through our INS (granted, after background checks and so forth).
Zimbabwe won’t be doing well with trade in the near future, except with China and the like.
My take is that China will step in at some point, with the new gov’t’s blessings.
Perhaps the only difference will be a different PR approach to get those foreign aid dollars rolling in again.
Just think of the Billions that will pour in from every corner of the rat infested liberal world.
Change has already come to that tragic country. It wasn't a change for the better. That is the trap the gullible and idealistic and the would-be revolutionaries fall into when they find fault with their present society - change is relatively easy; change for the better takes a little more than high ideals and carefully fostered resentment of the status quo.
What astonishes me - that's no exaggeration - is the degree to which ostensibly intelligent people are willing to ignore the obvious disaster and its obvious cause. Rhodesia has been given over to ignorance and hatred, thugs, parasites, and party functionaries who would benefit greatly from the bullet in the back of the head that they have so liberally prescribed for their enemies. Instead an international community too squeamish to watch the children who they condemned to it to starve , and too cowardly to name a political doctrine false and racist, will continue to prolong that country's agony and congratulate itself on its own moral superiority for doing so.
Reminds one just how thin is the veneer of civilization and how shallow the intentions of do gooders.
There may well not BE a new gang.Mugabe is sitting on the election results while his people are taking down the opposition around the country. When the count is finally announced we will probably see that Mugabe has won again. The vote itself doesn’t matter much. It is all in the counting.

It will probably be necessary to amend the url for the next month by changing the string segment "april2008" to "may2008".

Thanks for your polite way of stating what I wanted to.
....What you said.
Waiting for Carter’s statement on the election.......waiting..........waiting................
Needs repeating....
