A Fort Bragg soldier who crawled 200 feet while being fired upon to save a wounded colleague and then led a group of besieged soldiers to safety has received the Distinguished Service Cross.

Master Sgt. Brendan O'Connor received the cross in a ceremony Wednesday at Fort Bragg for his actions in Afghanistan. The cross is the Army's second-highest award for combat valor, behind only the Medal of Honor.

O'Connor was honored for his actions during a battle in 2006 in southern Afghanistan. He is assigned to the 7th Special Forces Group. The unit is based at Fort Bragg, a massive Army base that is home to the Army's Special Operations Command and the 82nd Airborne Division.
