RALEIGH - A hearing into the firing of a state trooper accused of mistreating his police dog opened today with a video of the officer kicking the dog as it was suspended from the railing of a loading dock. The 15-second video, taken by another trooper using his cell phone, shows Sgt. Charles L. Jones kicking the dog, Ricoh, five times. The dog was tied to the railing by its leash at the time, with its front paws in the air and its rear paws touching the ground. With each kick, the dog swung about two feet under the dock.

This case has been updated. The Court wants the officer to get his job back.

Nothing new here, cops hate dogs. That is why they shoot them whenever they get a chance.

Yes. It just doesn't make the TV show.

Cesar is a misogynistic, sadistic animal, and any dog trainer with any modern (within the last 30 years) training knowledge and feeling for dogs absolutely HATES what he puts on TV and passes off as "dog training." National Geographic is not watched in my home anymore, due to them still running his shows on their channel.

In actuality, there doesn't have to be that much difference; it is generally just a question of making the behavior as reliable as possible in a service dog; this is generally not as critical in companion dogs.

I can guarantee you that these sorts of "training techinques" went out of vogue years ago in competitive schutzhund training, and have no place in competent, reliable service dog training.

Most people that use these sorts of training techniques are living in the past, and just show that they are not smarter than the dog they are trying to train. We have been using positive motivational techniques in schutzhund since the early 1990s, and are continually learning how to do things better, with as little compulsion as possible, including during protection training. We threw away our pinch collars years ago and haven't missed them at all. (And don't get me started on electronic collars....)

The "Dog Whisperer" is a buffon, and is a pariah in the world of real dog trainers. He is unnecessarily cruel, and the techniques he uses are nothing short of psychological abuse. They are NOT training, and are more akin to the counter conditioning in "Clockwork Orange." You would be well advised to do some research before promoting someone like this as an expert dog trainer. Being on TV doesn't make one an expert...

National Geographic, by continuing to put his show on the air, is participating in the enabling of animal cruelty across the country, in the name of "training."

Bingo! You got it!

If you resort to force, it means that you gave up trying to out-think the dog you are trying to train; and, if it gets "out of hand", it means that you are not suitable to be a trainer, as you let a "dumb" animal get the better of you.

What a lot of people don't realize, is that using force has a LOT of negative side effects, that might only show up when you least expect it, and when you absolutely cannot have it happen.

You got some proof of that?

Of course not! We don’t need no stinkin’ proof here!

In actuality, I have seen him hang a dog on choke collar and lead, quite agressively, on TV. It is just a small step to the helicopter “technique”, even for one revolution. Anyone who “trains” as he does, I guarantee, has done it. Maybe not on camera, but he has done it. It is part and parcel of his training method. I have been around too many people that “train” as he does, and it is part of the method. That is why I moved on in my training: I couldn’t do or stomach the cruel methods.
