All you really need to know about the two eminent domain propositions on the June 3 ballot, 98 and 99, is that Proposition 99 is being touted by politicians and other government types as the real solution to government intrusion on private property ownership.
Among them are the usual suspects, including California Sen. Dianne Feinstein and California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, both of whom believe in Big Government, and both of whom describe Proposition 98 as a hindrance to solving such state problems as water quality and supply. Feinstein, in a release at the end of the week, said the measure would threaten the environment, among other things, and Schwarzenegger, in a similar announcement, said it would jeopardize the states ability to rebuild our aging infrastructure.
Translation: Proposition 98 would prevent state and local government from running roughshod over private property owners by giving them the ability to condemn and then acquire that property by force of law, all in the interests of creating bigger government at the expense of private individuals.
Among others whove come down on the side of Proposition 99, a toothless version of eminent domain protection which would enlarge, not lessen, the ability of government to take what it wants from the private sector, are such Big Government supporters as former Republican Gov. Pete Wilson, the American Association of Retired Persons, the League of Women Voters of California, the California Chamber of Commerce (which far too often works hand-in-glove with the Legislature), and the California Teachers Association (which issues marching orders to Democrat legislators on all proposals that expand government power, and those legislators fall in step like the robots theyve become).

I suppose they’ll be adding Jerry Brown, Villaraigosa, Newsom, Nunez, Maldonado and the rest of the liberals to this list, as well.
Dontcha just love this one-party “post-partisanship” stuff? /s
California breaks my heart everyday.
I haven't seen anything... but the Able Lapdog can always be counted upon--to do the wrong thing.
It becomes excruciatingly difficult to comment on California politics without resorting to "colorful" adjectives. ****
I hear ya!
Prop 98 BumP
I do not oppose eminent domain. If the government needs to condemn property to expand a highway, build a school, or other general public need then they should be able to do so - at market prices.
They must not be able to condemn private property to turn the property over to private concerns such as shopping mall and highrise developers.
Does Prop 98 prevent the government from the latter, while permitting the former? Where is the language of this bill?
I can just see those toads (all three of them) sitting in a back room asking each other, "What name can we come up with that might make the homeowning taxpayer think we're on their side?"
I have always been of the opinion that individuals or small groups who perpetrate that sort of fraud on the ignorant should be prosecuted. Freedom of Speech does not mean freedom to perpetrate fraud.
