Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) is proposing a greater federal commitment to people without health insurance on Tuesday, suggesting that it help funds states to set up non-profit risk pools to help Americans who are denied coverage or cant afford it.
McCains health-policy experts provided a ballpark estimate of $7 billion a year for the new federal commitment.
Cooperation among states in the purchase of insurance would
be a crucial step in ridding the market of both needless and costly regulations, and the dominance in the market of only a few insurance companies, McCain says in remarks prepared for delivery Tuesday morning in Tampa, Fla.

My favorite line:
If it turns out to be the case that one of the problems turns out to be not enough money, then [McCain would] work with Congress to develop the funding in a sensible and responsible way, Holtz-Eakin said.
BOHICA, taxpayers! Now somebody tell me that McCain is a fiscal conservative.
If government would get out of healthcare financing, it would drop the cost by a considerable margin. I’m guessing 25% or more.
Well, you are half right.
I’m still holding a slim hope that an acceptable Third Party Candidate emerges. Otherwise, it’s a beauty contest...choose which leftist candidate you want...
1. They don't seek preventative illness measures but then go to the hospital when they are really sick.
2. By law, hospitals cannot turn anyone away who cannot pay; costing both you and me.
3. By making insurance affordable through tax credits, McCain would be helping to reduce these costs.
4. There is an economic advantage when more premium-paying people are in a health insurance plan.
There is likewise no such thing as capping prices in a market economy . The price will be at the intersection of marginal demand and marginal supply .
Sounds familiar. To put the strategy succinctly: socialize the risks, privatize the profits.
Yes, by all meansm lets just go totally Communist with caps and cost controls.
How about getting government completely out and let the free market return?
This mess started in 1964 with the first real government intrusion into the sector and it has been FUBAR ever since.
Somebody? Why don't you want to say it. Somebody is the Federal government, they guys with the guns.
Hell, why stop with the health care industry? Let's nationalize the car industry, They're run by a bunch of screw ups. Somebody has to save the car industry, oh and lower car prices.
And food. Why should someone profit from people's need for food? A stable food supply is too important to leave to the mercy of speculators.
And on and on and on......
I am 57 years old, I have not had health coverage for over 12 years. And before then there was a time when I didn’t have coverage for even longer periods.
No one pays my health bills but me. And I am not a rich person, make under 65k/year, sometimes not that.
Why should I be FORCED to buy something for someone else when I do not buy it for myself?
When I was a single [arent I wirked abut 60 hours a week to raise my daughter, I could never afford to buy a house.
A man I knew who was buying a house and was black, siad the government was helping him pay him mortgage, the amount of money he was getting was about the amount they were stealing from me!
So I was buying his house
McCAIN 2008: "Because Liberal Is As Liberal Does."
Dude ... lighten up.
Great idea, but first you have to convince the public that health care is not a right, it's a commodity.
The problem is, people think of health care as a basic human right, and therefore, like basic social safety nets like welfare, should be maintained by the taxpayer. (government) That is where Medicaid came from originally.
Now, because of rising medical costs, from laws suits,(the need for torte reform, settlement caps) administrative costs (caused by too many insurers) doctors medical malpractice insurance costs, hospital administrative costs, drug costs, and just plain fat, lazy, unhealthy people costing insurers a lot of money when their health fails, more and more people are unable to pay for private insurance.
One solution, is that people should be putting the equivelant to private insurance costs into their own "insurance" investment plan, which will generate funds for when they do need medical services in their golden years, and maintain a simple basic accident type insurance plan during their healthy years.
That's not going to help anyone who didn't do this and are getting old now however. There's going to have to be some sort of expanded Medicaid program for those people, a preventative health care system to cut down expensive hospital ER costs,
And a government incentive program to get people to invest in their own future health care cost needs.
Nope. It’s too important.
Ugh. Sure wish we had someone decent running for office. Our only hope is that John will pick a decent Veep, then die soon after taking office.
Congratulations. Your Michael Moore impression is now perfect down to the last syllable and intonation.
You must be so proud.
Okay then ... what is your recommendation? What can we do to remedy the under and uninsured issue? What’s the best way to fix it?
BINGO you hit the nail on the head:
Its not a bad idea and its sure beats socialized medicine.
LOL! True.
