Supermaket chain Tesco has announced that a range of its own-brand products will carry labels showing the size of the goods' carbon footprints.
Tesco said it would label 20 items, including light bulbs and potatoes, during a two-year trial of the scheme, which is operated by the Carbon Trust.
Shoppers will be able to see how much carbon is emitted over the life of a product - from manufacture to disposal.
The store said it was introducing the labels in response to consumer demand.
"Customers tell us that it is very important to them," said David North, Tesco's community and government director.
"What they have said is that they want us to help them tackle climate change."

" Baking a potato in an oven generates much more emissions than if you boil it in a pan with a lid on." - Euan Murray, Carbon Trust
All I want to know is the shelf expiration date.

This is a good sign. It means that the carbon madness is nearing completion.
A lot of this is protectionism and supported by local and European businesses. For example, since Australian wine, because of it quality and lower price, has suppressed wine sales from France and other European, countries the European industry has encouraged these people to put stickers on Australian wine bottles (and American and Chilean wine, too) that claim these foreign wines, since they are being shipped all the way to the UK, are damaging the environment. Just follow the money when it comes to carbon credits.
Those footprint pictures are RACIST!!!!!
...and extremely offensive to Muslims! Showing the sole of a foot. Talk about unintended consequences...what a bunch of maroons.
The world has gone bonkers.
I think I’ll move to Japan, they don’t have carbon in Japan do they?
Same here. All this "green" crap is really starting to tick me off...
Interesting post (#6). I love Australian wine, btw! :o)
The parade of IDIOTS just gets longer each day.
Morons on parade.
I tried a potato in my lamp and tried to eat a light bulb...neither worked out well.

As long as it is a voluntary business decision, I have no problem with it. Anyone has the right to be stupid.
Just think of all the extra waste printing the labels - paper, glue, ink chemicals, plus the carbon produced by the extra workers to print the stupid things.
People who think they cause global warming should just stop breathing and leave the rest of us alone.
Printing the carbon label causes global warming, making the extra paper and ink causes global warming. Why don't they just stay home and plant a potato and eat it raw. graze on the lawn instead of cutting it with a lawn mower, drink their own urine.
idiots.
That is what the bible teaches.
"The wisdom of its sages shall decay, the intelligence of its intelligent men shall be shrouded." (Is.29:14).
"I shall destroy the wisdom of the wise and bring to nothing all the learning of the learned." 1 Cor.1:19
"Make no mistake about it: if any one of you thinks of himself as wise...then he must learn to be a fool before he can be wise. Why? Because the wisdom of this world is foolishness to God." (1 Cor.3:18).
Thank you for the insightful quotes.
