The Rev. Jeremiah Wright, explaining this morning why he had waited so long before breaking his silence about his incendiary sermons, offered a paraphrase from Proverbs: "It is better to be quiet and be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt."
Barack Obama's pastor would have been wise to continue to heed that wisdom.
Should it become necessary in the months from now to identify the moment that doomed Obama's presidential aspirations, attention is likely to focus on the hour between nine and ten this morning at the National Press Club. It was then that Wright, Obama's longtime pastor, reignited a controversy about race from which Obama had only recently recovered - and added lighter fuel.
Speaking before an audience that included Marion Barry, Cornel West, Malik Zulu Shabazz of the New Black Panther Party and Nation of Islam official Jamil Muhammad, Wright praised Louis Farrakhan, defended the view that Zionism is racism, accused the United States of terrorism, repeated his view that the government created the AIDS virus to cause the genocide of racial minorities, stood by other past remarks ("God damn America") and held himself out as a spokesman for the black church in America.
In front of 30 television cameras, Wright's audience cheered him on as the minister mocked the media and, at one point, did a little victory dance on the podium. It seemed as if Wright, jokingly offering himself as Obama's vice president, was actually trying to doom Obama; a member of the head table, American Urban Radio's April Ryan, confirmed that Wright's security was provided by bodyguards from Farrakhan's Nation of Islam.
Wright suggested that Obama was insincere in distancing himself from his pastor. "He didn't distance himself," Wright announced."

"Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached." - Manuel II Palelologus
LOL! Willie Horton would be proud! Reverend Wright makes Obama wish he was a Swift Boat Captain! Hahahahaahahaaha!
Oh well, people learn to deal with the pain. I have feared Hillary’s Presidency for 15 years. Will have to survive.
Her PIs will not spare FR. Will have to be careful what you post.
Sounds like he did everything but roll on the floor and foam at the mouth
Hypothetical.
Was Wright PAID to have this unexplainable meltdown in from of 30 cameras?
This was printed in the Washington Post? Obama must really be in bad shape now. The .... Chickens are coming home ....to ROOST
I love this last part of the article:
“And he vigorously renewed demands for an apology for slavery: “Britain has apologized to Africans. But this country’s leaders have refused to apologize. So until that apology comes, I’m not going to keep stepping on your foot and asking you, does this hurt, do you forgive me for stepping on your foot, if I’m still stepping on your foot. Understand that? Capisce?””
What a wonderful arrogant intimidating man.
Capisce, reverend. All too well
Hillary has long time Chicago political connections and like Obama is an Alinsky disciple. What if Wright owes Hillary and is paying her back for some long ago favors, orperhaps she has dirt on the reverend. Whatever, Chicago politics has a long history of infighting. This is looking more like a family feud (Chicago Style) than a national political contest. Dean, Pelosi, Reid can’t control it. watch out for drive bys!
“Was Wright PAID to have this unexplainable meltdown in from of 30 cameras?”
Well, given the approving comments at the Washington Post site, Obama has the anti-semite vote wrapped up.
Were Wright’s comments about different races having different brains this morning, or last night. Anyone?
Obama is such a rookie. Using one hand waiving Rezko in front of his face to paralyze him with worry, the other hand was opening the pandora's box of the Reverend Wright. Poor Barry can't walk and chew gum at the same time.
The timing of this couldn’t be any better for Hillary. If she wins the Democratic nomination then the author will be absolutely correct in marking between 9 and 10 EST this morning as the moment Obama lost. I think the exact time was around 9:22 when his prepared statments were finished and he began answering questions.
I can’t imagine what Obama and his advisor’s were thinking. They are saying that they can’t control the Rev., but I find it hard to believe that the Rev. didn’t speak with Obama about his intentions prior to going public. I’m guessing that a calculated decision was made. They may have thought that Obama has the nomination sewed up and that the time was right to let Rev. Wright go public. This way they would have the whole thing completely behind them before the general election battles.
Talk about a blunder of historic proportions. No matter how the Democratic nominations process turns out, the damage will be severe.
Holy cow, if I were a Dem superdelegate, there would be NO WAY I could vote for Obama now.
Funny how this seeming fresh breath of air (according to the fawning media) has turned out to be the hugest stink in Democratic presidential history.

I’m of the thought that all the self proclaimed black leaders of whatever church know darn well that an Obama presidency would marginalize their nonsense and diminish their earnings. They’d be happier with David Duke in the Whitehouse than Barak Obama.
WHY are we continually bombarded with these knaves and rogues and fools ???Why don’t they just go away??
Do I really have no better use of my time than to divert my attention to the ramblings of idiots, liars, and psychopaths? I feel like a moron just pronouncing the phonemes “Jeremiah Wright” and “Barack Obama”. THey are NOT WORTHY OF ANY ATTENTION, or TO BE TAKEN SERIOUSLY ON ANY LEVEL. Except for the fact, of course, that they’ve foisted themselves onto our lives with their strange needs and ambitions. I am really getting ready to move out of the country ASAP:
Is the quote about being thought a fool from Proverbs, or is it a proverb? I don’t know who Dana Milbanks is, but (s)he is representative of the types that get into the newspaper business because the education for the job is the easiest. If you don’t have a source, make one up.
