The crash happened at 0443 local time on Monday (2143 BST on Sunday), and rescue workers and local government leaders are at the scene. There are reports it was a head-on collision but a clear picture of what happened is yet to emerge, says the BBC's Michael Bristow in Beijing.

It’s easy to criticize China for their political situation, I’m no big fan, but the people themselves we know are one of the most unified and industrious people that exist. They will not only recover from this railroad accident, but learn from it. That’s in stark contrast to our own political/legal class who do nothing but look for blame. Perhaps someday our two countries can see eye to eye and cooperate instead of fight.

“A cargo worker at a nearby station suggested that judging from the location of the trains, about 40 km (25 miles) from Zibo, they were likely running at full speed at the time of the accident.”
The two colliding trains: T195 (express train) and 5034 (slow train). The T195 has a max speed of 200km/hr, and 5034 has a max speed of 120km/hr.
