Seven years after 9/11 I still can not legally carry a gun or knife or cane sheath with a sword in it on an airplane, in a taxicab, on the street or --in Washington DC-- in my own home!
Nothing has changed post 9/11. We have a long way to go before We, the People, have restored our Republic to the state of Sovereignty it does and ought to have.

I do not remember any TSA screening procedures on those long stage coach rides from the "east" to Californkneeah.

I cannot disagree with you on this. At all.
I have always been partial to S&W 640 Centennial with 110 grain hollowpoints.
For heavier work a Colt Series 70 1911 is usually comforting.
And, of course, for fieldwork something in .308 usually does the trick. Though occasionally I have yearning for a shoulder fired Stinger Missile just in case.....
