School officials have informed Pope that since Francisco Velasco, is 21, he is too old to attend the function Saturday night. Principal Robert McBride says the main reason is that 21 is the legal age for alcohol consumption.
Velasco, who is stationed at Fort Lee, Va. received permission from his superiors to fly to Chicago for the weekend just for the dance, but since he can't attend, Pope has decided to skip the function.

What a gorgeous daughter you have. Just stunning. She looks so happy - what a smile.
Her dress, her hair, everything; she is absolutely lovely!
You must be incredibly proud of her. Thank you so much for sharing!
I know what you mean. My oldest turns 20 next week and that seems impossible.
I am extemely proud of my baby girl. What is so funny about that photo is she is a major tomboy! She only has 4 dresses.
My oldest turned 21 (yikes!) in January. My baby girl will turn 18 on the 29th of this month.
Time just goes by to freakin’ fast!
Ahhh...The Heartbreaker Years!
Nothing wrong with a happy light hearted fellow.
Do you draw the line somewhere? If her boyfriend were 30? 35? 49?
Why does age matter? It’s a dance. As another poster mentioned, I don’t recall any rules about age when I was in school. It was a non-issue. No one was going to show up with someone vastly different in age. They would have been the butt of jokes forever. I don’t remember any large age differences showing up at proms. I can think of more important things to be concerned with.
I’d bet he wouldn’t be too old if he were muslim.

But sex, drugs and flushing babies down the drain (NJ) is just fine.
Another example of the stupidity and anti-military behavior rampant in the government schools that we all pay for.
Message to Principal: “Bite me.”

I believe that the school officials are just concerned that the young Marine’s presence could cause other young men to enlist.
Think about it... Young Marine with military bearing and a little more maturity, not to mention wearing a set of blues, becomes the center of attention of many of the girls (and secretly admired by most of the guys). It would be a powerful influence on the boys to hurry down to the recruiting center, and the lefty school administration folks simply can’t have that.
This is just their version of trying to throw the Marines out of “that place in California that shall not be named”.
The practice varies quite a bit across the country, and over time as well. Some places the prom is held at the school (not so much anymore, but back in the Dark Ages...) Sometimes the prom has a faculty sponsor or sponsors. Other places they may use some "non appropriated funds" to support it.
But almost everywhere they assert the power to control it, as a School Sponsored activity, regardless of funding or location issues.
And if she were lesbian and wanted the bring her girlfriend, it would have been fine.
I so agree. I remember many girls attending proms with their service member boyfriends, some of whom they’d dated for years. It was a big thing to have your BF come back in uniform for your prom, at least back in ‘84! So many of them were older than us. And hey, the 18 year old guys could slip across over to Maryland and get buy whatever booze they wanted in a 20 minute trip.
We have a friend whose mother died when he was young. His father started dating an 18 year old still in HS when the son was about 8. Dad was in his 30s then. They got married after she graduated and are still married to this day, 34 years later.
So was mine. I was 17 at the time. We’re still married 23 years later.
