SOLANA BEACH, Calif. - Authorities kept watch Saturday over a stretch of Southern California beaches, scanning the waters for a shark they believe killed a triathlete a day earlier.
While authorities advised against going in the ocean from north San Diego to Carlsbad, they said they expect to see people heading into the water to escape the region's summery temperatures.
"We're not going to make any arrests or anything" if people go into the water, "but we'll go talk to them," said David Ott, Solana Beach's public safety director.

In the interests of saving lives (supposedly) they will arrest you for smoking a cigarette on their parks, but they will only talk to you if you decided to go in swimming where a big toothy fish just killed a guy.
Kinda disgusting, don't you think?
Smoking arrests generate revenue
Shark deaths are just inconvinient
yeah, but the eaten guy’s not going to get a chance to smoke again and contribute to the tax base.
You’ll need a bigger boat.
The police can’t be everywhere. Everyone knows there was a deadly shark attack. For heaven’s sakes...how do you find it disgusting???? If people want to go against the grain and swim then they are taking their own lives into their hands knowing the shark may still be out there. What can anyone do about that? Arrest them? So what if they do? There will always be others who will push the envelope. Why put your life in jeopardy? That’s nonsense.
The sea belongs to the sea creatures big and small. After an attack like this I would think people would recall the fact when you enter the waters you are in the territory of the creatures there. Where are they supposed to go? We go into THEIR space. They know no better than to attack. At least people should practice some precaution and use a little common sense after such a tragedy as this man losing his life from a shark attack.
I hope people will heed the warnings but...they probably wont’. We’ll see. The part that is really bad is if they don’t heed the warnings and someone else is attacked...what was the point? The authorities are trying to PROTECT lives. That’s their job. Hope people will pay attention and conform. If not....
How dare someone swim after beach has been closed.
Remember we are but serfs to our master.
Mayhap they will ask politely. :)
The shark mistook the victim as a seal.
Everyone’s missing the bigger picture. Shark attacks didn’t happen until George W. Bush, Dick Cheney, Halliburton, evil Republicans, and Global Warming destroyed the pristine ocean environment, killed the shark’s natural food supply, and forced them to eat humans against their will.
Oh, that’s a sight I wouldn’t want to see. Land looks a little far away for that guy.
“Everyones missing the bigger picture. Shark attacks didnt happen until George W. Bush, Dick Cheney, Halliburton, evil Republicans, and Global Warming destroyed the pristine ocean environment, killed the sharks natural food supply, and forced them to eat humans against their will.”
Thanks for clarifying the mystery. California must vote for Hussein ObamaSammaLaden to make our coastal waters pristine and safe again. We can make the Governator the eternal life guard on these beaches to protect the environment from Gorebull Warming while pedalling Mythanol from his Hummer limo.
We can troll with Nancy Pelosi on a surf board to scare the Sharks away from these beaches.
They’ll hire OJ to look for the real killer.
Is that serfs or surfs? lol
If you don't get my point, there is no use trying to explain it to you.
The police cant be everywhere.
Good point. I hope you are a bit clearer about what the 2nd Amendment means than you are about what the point or my original remark was.
That’s the politically correct thing to say each time someone loses a piece of themselves or their life.
Why they should arrest the swimmer and leave the smoker alone.
