What is really, REALLY stupid about this - seals and I believe walrus had been BEACHING themselves for a while on that beach and they had called Sea World to get help. Now, DUHHH, why would people be allowed to swim where this is happening? And comes along of group of unsuspecting dummies all together in wet suits.

If any kind of sea life suddenly beaches itself in front of you in numbers (has happened to me) as my lifeguard friend says “If THEY can’t deal with it, YOU don’t want to”. This was totally unnecessary death.

From what I heard in news reports the guy was 66 training for a triathlon.

They estimated the shark to be a 16 footer.

Ocean kayaking or surfing is scary enough but swimming? That falls in line with bicycle riders who ride bikes on narrow well used roads.

There were reports of quite a few seals in that area.

I suspect the shark took the guy for a seal.

The sharks usually migrate towards feeding grounds about this time of year.

I was camping in Pismo the week before that attack. It was a food chain related situation. There was a larger than usual amount of small sand crabs and thus a larger amount of larger fish that feed on them. I remember seeing the sea birds in droves, scooping up fish. That in turn brought in the seals in large numbers. And we all know seals or tops on the great white menu. The woman who was killed had gone out to swim with the seals. When the shark got near, the seals swam off, leaving the woman to get attacked. She was a local college professor. You'd think she would have known better.

“If THEY can’t deal with it, YOU don’t want to”.

Interesting, I’d never thought of it that way before - makes sense. And I don’t even want to think about what is out there when those huge Whales get beached!! ;)

You are correct. It was reported that she was an ocean swimmer and often swam in that location.

I feel more comfortable if there’s lots of dolphins around, cause I’ve heard that dolphins like to avoid shark-prone areas and sharks generally steer clear of large groups of dolphins

Not exactly true, they feed off the same fish. Keeping at a reasonable distance they tend to mutually agree to ignore each other.
