The Green Phantom - Global warming's curious absence as a campaign issue.
Newsweek ^ | Apr 24, 2008 | Evan Thomas

Posted on 04/25/2008 1:10:23 PM PDT by neverdem

In the summer of 2006 I went to see Congressman Rahm Emanuel, who was running the Democrats' successful effort to regain control of the House of Representatives. I had been reading a great deal about global warming in the mainstream press ("Be Afraid, Be Very Afraid" warned Time). So I asked Emanuel, how are the environment and global warming playing out there in the heartland? Is it stirring voters? No, he replied. In the 2006 congressional elections global warming was virtually a nonissue, he said, a low-priority item way behind the war and the economy and old staples like education and health care. Global warming is an issue for the elites, he said, not for the average voter.

That's still true. The mainstream media continues to write urgently about global warming. Last month NEWSWEEK asked on its cover which candidate will be the most green. On Sunday the New York Times Magazine produced a special issue on how to reduce your carbon footprint-from changing your light bulbs to walking more to eating "slow food." Any reader of old-line mainstream media-the traditional news source of the upper middle class-would think that the country is rallying to a crisis.

But the disconnect persists. National polls show that the environment ranks fairly low as an issue that moves voters. In the Pennsylvania primary global warming was such a peripheral issue that exit pollsters did not even bother to measure voter attitudes toward it. Many younger voters wish the candidates would talk more about global warming. But most voters worry more about jobs and keeping fuel cheap. Aside from speaking in broad generalities and making vague promises, the candidates steer away from involved debate on global warming. (Enabled, it should be said, by political reporters. Of the more...)

The staggering cost of renewable energy

Sacrifice-serious wartime sacrifice for for a hypothesis, man made global warming, when not a single professional article in the scientific literature can be found that claims any warming that's been experienced is beyond normal variation, according to Roy Spencer?

You might be surprised to learn that there has never been a single scientific paper published which has ruled out natural climate variability for most of our current global-mean warmth. Not one.

There’s no debate because all three candidates are in agreement.

McCain has cleverly prevented global warming from being an issue by agreeing with the Rats .

One of the motivations of Global Warming hysteria is to vote in more democrats. Since McCain is nominally going along with they hype - POOF! no more issue.

I am more concerned about global cooling, however I have no idea what a president can do to change sun spot activity.

That because most Americans know full well “Global Warming” is BS. It is only in very well funded (Arab Oil Money perhaps)political influence buying pressure groups like the Sierra Club, and the the US Junk Media, that anyone takes the mythology seriously. That an Corporate board rooms who see “going green” as a way to use the Regulatory power of the Fed Govt to choke off competition and maintain their captive customer base.

This is going to change. As gas prices and the cumulative effect of the cost of energy stings, Republicans can prosper by bashing Dems and eco-zealouts for obstructing energy supply.

McCain is on his own.

You’re assuming Republicans will take a different approach. McCain and Gingrich don’t offer much hope.

McCain is on his own.

Unfortunately, he is the GOP standard bearer. The rest of us are on our own. McCain and the Dems agree on global warming and amnesty. Let the conservatives eat cake.

McCain has cleverly prevented global warming from being an issue by agreeing with the Rats .

If global warming was actually an issue that moved voters, then the Dems would be bringing it up. They'd say McCain was a phony Green in the pay of Big Oil, yadda. The fact that they don't talk about it indicates that poll testing and focus groups have shown them that the issue isn't a big winner. Whatever else you can say about Dems, they are political pros and they put a lot of effort into polling and focus groups. When Hillary makes a comment like the recent one about obliterating Iran, you know that must have been poll and focus-group tested.

Hey Evan, Maybe its because the public isn’t as dumb as a rock (apparently as you are), and has noticed that the world has not warmed for a decade, and is now cooling.

Naturally, Thomas overlooks the key reason all the shrieking about global warming has been largely ineffective - the fact that the old media’s credibility is gone.

McCain has cleverly prevented global warming from being an issue by agreeing with the Rats .

By and large, he has done that across the board, except on a very limited number of issues.

Evan Thomas...NewsweAk...sounds vaguely familiar. Idiot!

Any reader of old-line mainstream media-the traditional news source of the upper middle class...

Creating yet another division within our society, heh Evan?
For those of us that would rather gouge our eyes out than read the drivel the ENEMEDIA puts forth in their daily/weekly propaganda rags, you wish to relegate us all to the ignorant lower class scum of the earth category of an otherwise decent society. Is that it, Evan?

BTW, using the term mainstream media repeatedly does not make it true.

$3.70 a gallon gasoline makes everyone wonder why the leftists and their partisan media shills were crying about "blood for oil" every day since 9/12/2001. Makes it look like the failure of the Demwits to "stop the war" after they took control of Congress thanks to the 2006 election was part of some kind of global warming agenda. :'D Heads *we* win, tails *you* lose. Thanks neverdem.
