Mr. Clyburn added that there appeared to be an almost unanimous view among African-Americans that Mr. and Mrs. Clinton were committed to doing everything they possibly could to damage Mr. Obama to a point that he could never win in the general election.

It seem to me that what Mr. Clyburn is really saying is that those who hold this 'almost unanimous' view don't want Hillary to actually run against Obama. If Obama wins the Democratic nomination, the same thing will happen to John McCain, everything he says will be calculated against a race-o-meter and anything that can be spun to paint him as racist will be spun. This tactic is effectively tieing Obmaa's opponents hands behind their backs and make any sort of realistic political slugfest impractical.
