Recent talks between former president Jimmy Carter and a militant leader failed to make much of a difference in Gaza, Palestinian Foreign Minister Riyad al-Malki said Wednesday.
Carter's meeting with exiled Hamas militant leader Khaled Meshaal, which drew anger from both the U.S. and Israel, did not produce a cease fire or prisoner exchange between Hamas and Israel, al-Malki told Agence France-Presse.
"The only thing he achieved was permission on the part of Khaled Meshaal of Hamas to deliver a letter from a detained Israeli soldier to his family. Nothing else," al-Malki told AFP.
Also on Wednesday, Carter stopped just short of saying that Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice was lying about warning him not to meet last week with Hamas leaders in Syria.
"President Carter has the greatest respect for Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and believes her to be a truthful person," read a statement issued by the Carter Center in Atlanta. "However, perhaps inadvertently, she is continuing to make a statement that is not true."

KarlInOhio: Palestinians 28 years behind the curve
Mission accomplished!
Oh yes he did!
He managed to undermine the United States AND make us look weak in the eyes of Islamofascists when he was in office all at the same time.
We understood that concept back when he was our Commander-in-Chief.
I think it is completely inappropriate for the Palestinians to comment on Carter’s presidency, even though they are correct.
Failed legacies cannot be repaired 20+ years after leaving office.
Palestinians: Carter Achieved Nothing
I thought the story was about Carter’s one term.
Wrong. He got frequent flyer miles.
Carter proved to be a useful tool for the terrorists and now they feel free to shit all over him.
How stupid can a human (democrap) be?
Bwahahahahahahah.
just like during his “presidency”.
Well, I take that back. Carter DID achieve something: he set us back ten years.
Billy Beer wins (more supporters) again.
“Carter achieved nothing”......
No....Carter continues to add to his legacy of nothing with every trip he makes....
Wrongo.. It got Jimmah all he wanted. Some press and anti-semitic financial contributions to the Carter Center.
I would like to know just exactly what peace deal Carter thought he meted out. The former president went to the middle east to meet with terrorist, exiled Hamas militant Khaled Meshaal. Guess he thought our State Department was a bunch of incompetents who couldn’t get a peace deal going between Palestine and Israel. Guess he thought he’d show Condi Rice a thing or two. So off goes the peanut farmer to meet with Hamas. Problem is, there is no promised cease fire. There is no prisoner exchange. And according to the Palestinian Foreign Minister, Riyad al-Malki, Carter didn’t accomplish anything. In my opinion, all he managed to do was cloud the situation more. The problem is, Hamas does not represent the Palestinian people. So why was Carter meeting with Hamas in the first place? Guess just because he wanted to. Some people will do anything to grab a headline, it seems to me. Just go home, Mr. Carter, and try to look like a former president, if you can remotely guess what that might look like. Meeting with terrorists does not give the appearance of statesmanship.
In the meantime, the President is meeting in the Oval Office, probably as we speak, with the real leader of the Palestinians, Mahmoud Abbas.
Seems to me that all Carter is doing is inflaming the whole process.
Now I'm in a quandary.
I never, ever wanted to find myself agreeing with the mass murderers about anything!
