NEW ORLEANS (AP) - John McCain toured still hurricane-damaged areas of New Orleans and declared that if the disaster had happened on his watch, he would have immediately landed his plane at the nearest Air Force base. The Republican presidential candidate is campaigning this week in what he calls forgotten areas of the country. He offered a pledge Thursday to New Orleans residents that their situation will not be forgotten and that such a botched disaster response will never happen again.
McCain was unsparing in his criticism of the Bush administration. He said Congress must share some of the blame, too.
Drawing a sharp contrast to President Bush, McCain said he would have landed his plane "at the nearest Air Force Base and come over personally."
Now if McCain had had the stones to say any of that I would have sent him a contribution instantly.
Are you volunteering?
I'm not bitter...I'm just looking to cling to something or somebody...
...I refuse to be typecast, and that's why I'm looking for change I can believe in.
No they weren't. I was there.
Everyone knows that if you decide to ride out a hurricane , you need enough food and water to last 4-5 days!!
Apparently nobody in the Federal government knows that if the Federal levees break, a lot of folks' supplies are going to be under water.
And, well ... well,
he wooda done gooder.
Now withdraw your comment and stop with the negative campaigning.
Agreed,
McCain is much better than either of the dem. contenders.
By blaming the President, they fail to engage the correct argument. Because they will lose.
Oh goody, McLame gave me a reason to bring back Looter Guy!
Why were you still there? Didn’t they warn you to get out 2 days before it hit?
I am sorry, I watched the whole thing 24/7 on the news channels and most everyone was out by the end of the first week as I recall. I am sorry for your loss and pain, but LA can blame most of the Katrina problems on the local and state governments!
Good Point!
1. Provided an opportunity for a photo op
2. Given McCain a platform to complain about violent weather changes and to tout the McCain-Lieberman Climate Stewardship Act
as the necessary action to prevent total destruction of the earth.
Remember Monty Python's Upper-class Twit of the Year? Never in my life would I have thought this country would offer up such a pathetic collection of candidates. If it weren't so incredibly tragic, watching these three trying to out fumble each other would outdo any comedy show ever produced.
This nation is about ready for 1776-redux.
You are correct Penelopesire! Here are the “KATRINA LIVE THREADS”, that began days before the hurricane hit. Many, many, local Freepers provided local coverage too.
It provides evidence of all the phone calls, pressers, speeches, who made what decisions when, warnings from the President, the Weather Channel talking with local authorities, the Mayor of NO, the gov, the Coast Guard, military, Homeland Sec, FEMA, everything.
All the time-lines are here also, it proves all the lies, misreporting, misperceptions, of the MSM and the Dims.
Let me say what no politician has the balls to say: Katrina was a failure of the GOVERNED as much as it was a failure of the government. I heard one of the race-hustlers being interviewed after the fact replying to the flooded school bus question, and his answer was (paraphrasing) "Where would we take them? Where would folks use the bathroom?..." The answer: away from the flood......
At the time I was working for the Army and Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES) and I remember the exchange and food court were wiped out. I saw pictures of hangers and support equipment destroyed. Sorry, but I do not remember the base name. I know the food court reopened two years later as I had to set up some software for that.
Here is the timeline according to WIKI:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timeline_of_Hurricane_Katrina
Hurricane hits August 29...by Sept. 1, the press was already reporting on ‘hungry and thirsty’ stranded people for cryin out loud and blaming President Bush!
National guard arrives at the Superdome on Sept 1 with over 400 buses of food and water!
Then you have the reports of rampant looting and crazy folks shooting at the rescue helicopters, a mayor and governor that would not do the most basic things, like get the folks out before the hurricane or sign federal emergency acts!
By the Sept.4...the Superdome was completely evacuated.
That’s 6 days if you include the day of the hurricane.
And that is with an entire major US city under water, major highways, airports and rail lines underwater or destroyed. It is pretty remarkable if you ask me.
Actually, Keesler AFB MS is the closest Air Force base to N.O., and we got our collective butts handed to us by Katrina which came ashore on the MS/LA border and tracked our way. Barksdale suffered very little to no damage from the storm as far as I have heard.
That being said, there isn't a damned thing McCain could have done by landing here or there other than get in the way and cause even more problems. President Bush came down here within a very few days and even then it was possibly too soon since most of us were more worried about picking up the peices (if any were left) than a desire to see any politician, even the President.
As for N.O. ... well, don't get me started.
WOW!! Thanks for the link. I trust the freeper threads more than WIKI anyday..LOL!
I guess a politician has got to do what a polititian has got to do, BUT THIS IS RIDICULOUS!!!
For crying out loud, what the heck is this fool doing this for?? He just lost a ton of votes.
Does he really have enough democrats on his side, that he is convinced that he just need us.
I hate Obama and the Clintons (all dems actually) enough to force myself to vote for McCain, but damn!!
It’s like he’s doing his best to make something that is already extremely difficult..... into something flat out impossible.
Damn him.
