Republicans once feared Obama as a uniquely attractive candidate who could inspire the party base while winning over moderates and independents. Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., was thought too divisive.
That was before Obama's long struggle to get his party's nomination. While he retains the lead in votes and pledged delegates, losses in key states like Pennsylvania and Ohio have cost him momentum.
Controversies such as the caustic remarks of Obama's former pastor, and the senator's reference to small-town voters as "bitter" have hurt, too.
Obama's support seems increasingly concentrated among African-Americans and educated liberals.
Then there's Clinton's tenacity despite being written off repeatedly. Her pluck suggests that her family can't be underestimated, especially in a campaign and the McCain people know it.
The conservative National Review said in an online editorial that Clinton's fans see her as better at "reaching the downscale whites, union members, Catholics and Hispanics the party will need to win in November. It is a plausible argument."
McCain seems to fair better against Obama than Clinton in key battleground states.

What a master stategerist he is, eh what?
Is it too late to vote for Pat Paulsen?
The dems will not hand the nomination over to The Beast, otherwise it will mean riots in the big Northern city dem strongholds and the end of the dem party.
Hussein gets the nod and then has to face the code worded “Blue Collar Workers.”
McCain wins leaving the end result reminiscent of McGovern’s disaster.
No Shiite, Sherlock. I and others here on this forum were saying this from the gitgo and were expressing our dismay with Rush from the beginning of Operation Chaos.
I finally gave up......the majority here seem to be unthinkingly supportive of Operation Chaos....and dissenters to this very dangerous strategery get the pipe.
Rush was at it again today......promoting Hillary and blasting McCain, although I must admit McCain deserved it today.
I would see McCain winning approximately 40 states out of 50 if Nobama is the Dem candidate.

From your lips to God’s ears.
DOWNSCALE WHITES? I got an idea. For everyone who think they are smarter than Rush get your own radio show and give the minds full of mush the information they need. I think you’ll go the way of Air America.
I’ve heard that theory; assuming that’s the point of OC, what is the intended result? Confusion? I don’t see that this approach can lead to any predictable results. For instance, in PA, if OC favored a Hillary win in order to maintain the race to Denver, what, if anything, could Obamabots do to counter it? In other words, what is the expected reaction when OC is in effect? Assuming it really gets in Dems heads, one would think the reaction would be greater numbers of Hill and Obama votes. I think just pumping up Hillary (unpleasant image) and battering Obama would be effective enough, but registration jumping (or the mere rumor of that) is as likely to be counterproductive.
You beat me to it. elpresidentia clinton is going to owe Rush and Sean big time if she takes the oval office. Wonder if she'll give Rush discount for a night or two in the Lincoln Bedroom?
Actually, I've been with you guys from the beginning on this and have even wondered if Rush wasn't trying to throw the whole election to the 'Beast.
I've been trying to take him at his word that he wasn't. However, with every day it becomes more likely that he really wants Hillary to get the nomination and even the Presidency.
Rush is seeking attention and trying to establish relevancy. He had his 15 minutes when he was the water boy for Newt & Contract With America but ever since, he's been just a radio talk show host.
McCain certainly is not, at least publicly, kissing up to Rush nor was any other Republican candidate during the primaries. Rush's ego craves attention and every day, regardless what controversy arises in the Democrat primary, Rush is Johnny-on-the-spot claiming credit on behalf of Operation Chaos.
He's just like the rooster who thought that his crowing made the sun rise!!!
“Much better than Straight Talk Express, AKA Ill Pee On Your Leg And Tell You Its Raining.”
I kinda like the “B.S. Express.”
Politics is like religion, once your god looses a an election to a superior god you get pissed off and either stay home or support another god. I find the fact that Rush can sow doubt among the heathens is very funny.
Rush is a commentator, you can't quantify what he expouses and what his listeners do! This is the interesting part, The Fog of War.
Yeah, that one is perfect.
I actually agree with all that, But It Is Done.
Do not over play the hand of the Chaos strategy. Its work is done. Do not fritter away the victory.
It is now time to erase her and let Obama fail to undo all the damage she did to him and McCain wins.
If she wins, she becomes the historical comeback figure. No. Just erase her now. She has fatally weakened Obama by forcing him leftward. Take no more risks with her.
I’m telling you right now-I live in Ohio, and the slimeball Clintons are ADORED here, by idiots who remember the good financial times of the 90s. This state is in a near depression, and they think if they get a third term for Bill we’ll go back to the days of milk and honey. The unions love him, even though he shoved NAFTA through with a lame-duck cRAT congress (never mentioned here). Obama could never win the state. The ‘conservatives’ who think they’re clever by keeping these bastards alive are playing with fire, and they’re going to be sorry if they grab the nomination. This state will be in their pocket, especially now that we have all cRats in charge in the big state offices, thanks to Taft, the worst and most arrogant (and most socially and fiscally liberal , regardless of party)p**ck we ever had for governor.
If Rush dropped Operation Chaos right now, I might agree with you.
At this point, however, the mission as he described it originally is accomplished. Hillary isn’t dropping out.
And Limbaugh isn’t stopping either, because he has more CHAOS hats, coffee mugs, and T-Shirts to sell.
Except It ISN’T just Limbaugh. It’s Coulter, Hannity, Ingraham, Levine, and more that are promoting this crap. Hannity doesn’t even use his “stop Hillary Express” opener any more-he used that for what-2 years? Haven’t heard it for 2 months. You cannot tell me the MILLIONS of people who listen to/read these people on a daily basis weren’t responsible for her taking at MINIMUM-TEXAS, which is where her ‘comeback kid’ status started. The Clintons had been expected to win Ohio, but I think they gave her a wider margin here. At any rate, it made me sick to my stomach that Texans who didn’t remember, or didn’t care, about WACO, were the ones who saved them. Of course it’s having an effect. Combine all those listeners/followers. Plus FOX news now has Hillary, Mcaullife, and all their syncophants comingon to campaign(remember when they shunned FOX? Now they’re buddies).brag while it’s non-stop Bash Obama for 2 hours on O’Reilley and Hannity & Colmes.
I’ve been pissing into the wind here since the KAOS crap started too. I’m on your side.
This one got my back, in a very personal way. In spite of the anger, I doubt I can bring myself, morally, to contribute or vote for a Democrat, but neither can I, at this moment in time, vote for McCain.
What a sad impasse we've come to, and I don't expect it to get any better before November.
