Bartenders serve up drinks, customs checks Policy at 2 halls called unfair to immigrants Email|Print|Single Page| Text size – + By Maria Sacchetti Globe Staff / April 24, 2008

All the 33-year-old illegal immigrant wanted was a beer. After nearly a decade in this country, the Irish national knew to steer clear of police and federal agents. But he was stunned this month when a bartender at the Orpheum refused to serve him because his passport lacked a US Customs stamp.

Even better. It’s the bartender’s company’s policy.

The ACLU was on WRKO this morning boo-hooing. What they don’t say is, that if a bartender has to refuse service to an American Citizen with a Duplicate License issued by the Commnowealth because he was robbed by an Illegal Alien, he is doing so because his employer can lose his Liquor License to the Commonwealth that issued it.

“I wouldn’t recommend it if, in fact, it does have the side effect of denying illegal immigrants the right to have a cocktail,” he said. “I just think you’re really taking a class of people, and based on the lack of a customs stamp you’re denying them service. I’m not sure if I’m comfortable with that.”

I’m comfortable with it.
Note to Mr. Pokaski: illegal means no rights at all.
I especially love that the illegal immigrant spoke on condition of anonymity because of fear of deportation.

The bartender was apparently only following company policy.

The article says that bartenders were confused by all the varieties of foreign passport ID, so the company decided to use the US Customs stamp - which is uniform no matter what country's passport you hold.

The illegal has quite a bit of gall to lodge a complaint.

He really seems to feel entitled.

“the right to have a cocktail”

I tried that line with my ex-wife. She said it wasn’t in the Constitution.

Why were they carding a 33-year-old anyway? Not too many people that age can pass for 20 or under if they tried.

The ludicrous laws used to prevent the slightest possibility of anyone under 21 ordering alcohol are the source of this debacle.

No, but its in the Declaration of Independence.

“Endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, among them....the Pursuit of Happiness...”

A good stiff belt is happiness to many.

I also think it might fall under the purview of the 9th and 10th Amendments, too.

At my age its kind of flattering and made my day.

Too bad federal, state, and local, “hand out” agencies don't adopt this policy. Then we can deny them tax payer funded services, before they waste our money on people who don't belong here.

"I wouldn't recommend it if, in fact, it does have the side effect of denying illegal immigrants the right to have a cocktail,"

The right to a cocktail? Since when did that become a right of anyone? What a stupid statement. Illegals are not guaranteed the rights of US citizens, and I'm not even in agreement that it is a right for anyone to have a cocktail.

The Pew Hispanic Center estimated in 2006 that 150,000 to 250,000 immigrants in Massachusetts are here illegally.

If we can get all the illegals out of Massachusettes by the next census we might be able to get them down to 7-8 liberal reps in the US House. That would mean 2-3 fewer Barney Franks and Gerry Studds poluting capitol hill.

No chance. I was born and raised in MA. Finally got out for good when I was 28. White Irish and Italians (no matter their economic status) usually go 2-1 for the 'Rats. They were raised by parents and grandparents who felt that they were discriminated against by old-school "aristocratic" Republicans like the Cabots and the Lodges.

I'll have to check with Elliot Ness, and get back to you on that. LOL

But a cocktail without a revenue customs stamp, is another matter.
