Pelosi wants Bush to stop filling Petroleum Reserve By Mike Soraghan Posted: 04/24/08 11:54 AM [ET] House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) Thursday called on President Bush to stop filling the Strategic Petroleum Reserve as a way to reduce gas prices at the pump.

Her call came after days of demands by House Republicans that she produce a plan to reduce gas prices.

“I call upon the president today to work with Democrats to lower gas prices,” Pelosi said.

The Speaker stated that the reserve is 97 percent full, and cited experts saying that the move could reduce gas prices by as much as 5 cents.

Pelosi also called on the president to support legislation that she said would “hold OPEC accountable” for high gas prices and end what she considers to be subsidies to big oil companies.

“All of these are part of saying the leverage is with the consumer and not big oil,” Pelosi said.

as a way to reduce gas prices at the pump.

And not only that, but:

(1)It's for the children.

(2)Women, children and the poor hit hardest.

(3)It's for the environment.

Did I forget anything?

Let's get this straight: the Speaker Of The House wants us to be subject to foreign blackmail just to save 5 CENTS at the gas pump? I think I've overestimated that woman's intelligence! ROFL!

Thank God the English language saw the Democrats coming and had already invented the word: "MORONS!"

That Pelosi wants Bush to stop doing anything is an excellent reason to keep doing it!

I had my own doubts about the SPR until this.

The Democrats are now on record, claiming both that the million a day we could take out of ANWR wouldn’t make a difference, but that the 50,000 we put INTO the SPR a day would make a significant impact on prices.

They are wrong on BOTH counts. 50,000 a day is nothing. But a million a day would make a serious dent.

I'd like to see 5% to 10% of the SPR bought from coal and saltwater algae sources. Yes it would be much more expensive but it would be strategic to know how to do these things at any price. Leaps in technology are usually driven by the military because only they can afford it initially. Then the price of these fuels will drop like a rock and the Middle East will re-join Africa in irrelevance.

Drill wells and build refineries. Nothing else is going to work.

A lot of analysts have been asking why we are filling the reserve with prices so high as well. Combined with our cruiser deployments, there may be some concerns about something cooking in the ME. This President wants to be ready.

Pelosi is desperate to blame the President for high prices, while praying that no one recalls that they all INSISTED that the Iraq war was ONLY to keep oil prices down.

Pelosi wants to hold OPEC “accountable”. How do you threaten the OPEC cartel?

Is this woman on meth or something?

How about a federal and state gas tax freeze, that would make a dent.

That sounds like an excellent idea. Seems like I heard someone on the radio propose that the other day--maybe it was Newt Gingrich.

Here in CA we have the following taxes;

Fed excise tax, $0.184/gal
State excise, $0.18/gal
Sales tax $0.27/gal (7.25% on $3.75/gal)
Total $0.63/gal

So this was her solution that she promised a year and 3 months ago when the Rats took control? I bet she put a whole 7 years into thinking of this one.

Seems like a good idea to stop filling it while the price of oil is so high, and resume when the price drops a bit.

This action was suggested by some freepers in a thread a few weeks back.

Gas Prices Hit Record on Low Supplies

See post 12.

For the record, I didn't believe we were still filling it. I was wrong.

SPR is essentially being filled for free, because it comes from the offshore oil and gas leases the government has sold to oil companies, and the government, instead taking a cash royalty, is taking its share of oil in actual physical delivery to SPR.

It will be another achievement of the Bush Administration to leave office with SPR full for the first time in history.

Stupid hypocrite. Since she believes in the Global Warming Global Emergency, she should be thrilled that prices are up.

I seriously believe that if the USG merely announced that it would open ANWAR, announced that it would go headlong into the newly defined deposits in the Midwest, started talks with any of the European firms that have already built successful nuclear plants, and appeared to be setting aside funds for the initial moves -

OPEC prices would plunge nearly overnight.

Simply the threat of calling their hand should scare the hell out of them - and actually going forward with that threat should nail it down.
