Not Such A Happy Birthday (Shirley Temple Breaks her Arm)
Army Archerd
April 23, 2008
Shirley Temple is 80, April 23... I was sure I wouldn't be able to get through on the phone to wish her a happy birthday -- so I called today. She didn't sound happy at all. Over the (many) years, we usually chat at great lengths -- on all subjects -- from showbiz to politics -- both about which she is well-versed and legitimately well-opinioned.
But her always-warm voice was different and she begged off quickly explaining, "I broke my left arm." She awakened during the night, neglected to turn on a light and fell over a chair and suffered a compound fracture. "It's very painful," she allowed.
Until now, Shirley had been busy finalizing the second book of her autobiography -- the first is "Child Star' -- but had not yet signed with a publisher. She can add this chapter to her incredible story. And I have been lucky enough to have been present at some of her accomplishments, history and honors.

How awful to hear. Prayers for her full recovery. She is truly an American treasure.
Obama’s camp cries “Foul!” Demands that she be referred to as “Shirley Temple Black.”
I still have my blue Shirley Temple glass. Someday on Ebay...
Give her my regards and prayers for fast healing.
I read her first bio, and she is a gem, a thinker, and she grew up, against all odds, as a normal human being.
“She is truly an American treasure.”
She truly is. I had the pleasure of having dinner with her and her husband, Charles Black, once during a fund raising campaign in Indiana when I was a young news reporter. Very nice, gracious people.
Oh, I LOVE Shirley Temple! Loved watching her as a kid! Prayers for a quick recovery for her arm, and continued long life! (I didn’t know she was older than my Mom!)
prayes and best wishes.
My mother too! She has two Shirley Temples items..maybe more. My grandmother used to do my mother’s hair in rag curls to look like Shirley Temple!
I agree—prayers up for Shirley! She gave us great joy as a child, and is a gracious and classy lady now.
My Mother did my sister and I’s hair in rags, too....I always thought we were the only ones who ever did that!
I wonder if she is going to have Animal Crackers in her soup.
I am so sick and tired of that commercial.
At any rate, best wishes on a speedy recovery.
She’s still cute, too!!! She never lost that pucker.
My Grandmother did mine once too!
I'll drink to that.
Happy Birthday, Shirley! Get well soon!
