I have had the not so pleasure of knowing Sargeant Bachnicki and let me tell you this situation is typical of him. He is cold hearted and only cares about being a big bad arrogant so called cop. He gets his kicks from throwing around his so called authority. If it was his family it would be different. I hope the father kicked his ass.

If it were my son or daughter, I probably would have done the same thing.

How sad for that Father. How terribly sad. My heart hurts for him.

Thanks for posting the link to the second article. People were assuming that due to the downed power line, this was the reason they were holding the father back. However, as can be clearly seen by the photo accompanying your article, the dump truck was clear on the other side of the road in the shoulder opposite the kid’s car (with several car lengths in between them as well), so that particular point was a non-issue, frankly.

Don’t know who is more to blame here — one has to have compassion for the father who undoubtedly only had one thing on his mind - getting to his son...

I’m pretty positive this most likely could’ve been handled in a better way by the officer(s). Handled in a way that was positive for both the father, and the responders at the scene...

Prayers for the family who has lost their young son, and prayers for the other driver who undoubtedly is experiencing grief at his involvement.

I would like to reply to all who have posted their comments on this issue. Since most of you believe in what the media prints or brodcast. The paper forgot to print that the father had pushed Sgt. Bachnicki four times. The is is little LAW called “Interfernce at an Emergency Scene”. This is a horrible situation to be in for all parties involved, but if the father would of just let the rescue crews do their job, he would of been with his son prior to him being flown from the scene. Sgt. Bachnicki was olny looking out for the rescue workers, and Mr. Carter. How can we perform our job with a parent or a loved one decides to interfer with the rescue attempts. Sgt. Bachnicki, I am sure of would of rather the father spend time with son than have to restrain him. I have had the luxury of working with the Sheriff’s Department, and Sgt. Bachnicki. It is always nice to look over your shoulder and see Bachnicki or one of the other deputies standing there. So for the people who do not deal with this on a daily basis, how can you so easily point the finger at someone who does this job day after day.

Something else the paper neglected to print , is that the Sheriff’s Department drove him to the hospital to be with his son. There are other issues that are being dealt with in regards to this matter, but the almighty truth telling media has not printed or broadcasted that either.

This is in regards to smalltown USA, make sure you aleast know something about lay-out of the area you decide to bash.

So being a firefighter fro the area I am glad that I can do my job with the public interfering in the scene.

My thoughts maybe wrong, but that is one less person I have to worry about getting injuried.

Welcome to Free Republic. And thank you for your side of the story. Having lived in Central Ohio for the past 16 years, I usually know better than to take anything from The Dispatch at face value.

Does anyone remember the landslide at La onchita, California? Jimmie Wallet went to buy his girls some ice cream and when he came back his house was buried. The a-hole cops were total jerks and arrested and restrained him when he became distraught and tried to help dig for him. He lost his whole family.

Get a jury trial and the case is over.

YOU ARE COMPLETELY WRONG!!!!!!!
NO ONE FROM THE SHERIFF’S DEPARTMENT DROVE THE FATHER TO THE HOSPITAL, THAT IS AN OUTRIGHT LIE!!!!!!! HE WAS FORCED TO GET A RIDE TO THE HOSPITAL NOT KNOWING IF HIS SON WAS ALIVE! YOU ARE SIMPLY WRONG IN YOUR COMMENTS AND THIS MATTER WAS HANDLED WITHOUT ANY PROFESSIONALISM ON THE PART OF THE DEPUTY.

This is to all...

As much as I appreciate the time that everyone has taken out of their busy days, it disturbs me how much everyone has “arm chair quarter-backed” this incident. The point that I think everyone is overlooking is that a man lost his young son. I think everyone should be giving condolences to this man for his loss and trying to figure out ways to keep another young teenager from losing their life in the same fashion.

Instead, this has turned to the bashing of what I consider to be a fine Deputy and excellent person. I have had the HONOR, (and yes I do mean HONOR) of working close to Sgt Bachnicki for the past 4 years. Had it not been for Sgt Bachnicki I probably wouldn’t be alive to give my opinion here, which I’m sure some of you wouldn’t mind.

What most of you don’t understand is that yes, this is small town USA. The area here is so under-funded that most times there is only one person available to respond to crash scenes. So the option of two deputies walking the father to the car... well isn’t always realistic. Neither is having a Chaplain respond to every crash. We do have a Chaplain, he is an elderly gentleman and is recovering from a fractured skull. Something else no one seems to understand is that the newspapers don’t always tell the whole story. Everyone hears “Police Corruption” and they buy the paper... they hear “Police saved a young child” and no one cares.

I have unfortunately been on several fatal crashes in my years in law enforcement. And yes, there were some crashes that I could actually allow the family members close... most I couldn’t. It all depended on many factors that most people cannot even begin to fathom. You all have no idea what a Firefighter, EMT, or Officer of any kind goes through when handling these crashes.

To re-direct a little. I hope the father of this teenager is able to do something beneficial from all of this. It is my understanding that he is attempting to fund a scholarship program in honor of his son. Lobbying in reference to driving age would also be great. I truely hope he is able to do so. As far as a law suit goes... what does that really accomplish? It won’t bring his son back. It won’t change this incident.

Don’t judge unless you have been in the exact same situation... which I’m sure most of you could not deal with.
