"Thanks be to God that Gov. Palin is pro-life and the baby wasn't one of the 80% of Down syndrome lives that are aborted each year,"

Ditto!

God bless her. Downs children can be a challenge, but most times they are so simple (in a good way) and full of love that they truly do bring great blessings on the family who accepts them with love.

Beautiful lady in every way.

If I weren’t already married to the most wonderful person in the world, I’d propose.

Dear redpoll,

My own experience suggests that when one's unborn child is diagnosed with Down Syndrome, there are at least subtle pressures from one's health care providers to do away with the child. Pressure to obtain the death of the child can also come from other corners of one's life.

Of course she was pressured. Doctors, nurses its constant.
I just had a friend whos son was diagnosed wtih Anencephaly
and was constantly pressured to abort the child. David was very lucky God picked my friends for his parents. Although he only lived 4 hours, the lives he touched has been immense. It allowed alot of dialog on why not to abort. So although it may not have been a political pressure. I’m sure Pallin received alot of pressure.

“The Palins have four other children including Track, 18, Bristol, 17, Willow, 13 and Piper, 7.”

Along with the name Trig, these are soap opera names!

God bless this wonderful woman and her new critter, God’s special angel.

The unstated purpose of the prenatal test for Down Syndrome is to abort babies who test positive.

The overwhelming number of babies (as high as 90%) who test positive are aborted, even though the rates of “false positive” results are fairly high.

Dear wagglebee,

Because of initial statistical misinterpretation, I guess that with our first child, we were a “false positive.” We were initially told that we had an 80% chance of our son being born with Down Syndrome.

We used nurse-midwives for our pregnancies/deliveries. Even though our nurse-midwives practice was “pro-life,” the first thing out of the nurse-midwife after telling us that our son likely had Down Syndrome, was to inquire as to whether or not we'd like to avail ourselves of “choice.”

I confess that our reaction to the dumb b!tch was less than kind, but she got the message.

“They retain a sweetness and innocence throughout their lives.”

Our neighbor had Downs Syndrome and was the sweetest kid. We moved in 1965 and I saw her recently for the first time since and she remembered me, my family and that we lived next door. She came over and put her head on my shoulder and I melted. She’s obviously older, and gray, but is still as innocent and pure as when I remember her when I was very young.

I know that a lot of pro-life pregnant women (especially those over the age of 35) are completely refusing to have the tests done.

Most of us know somebody who has a child with Down Syndrome and while there are certainly difficulties with them (although I’m not sure they are any worse than the “normal” difficulties with teenagers, etc.), all of these families speak of the great joy these children bring to everyone around them.

And I resemble that remark.

I think Laz was simply trying to inject a little stale ‘light humor’ into an otherwise sad situation - a bit tasteless, but humorous nonetheless.

AMEN indeed, wagglebee - I wonder if anyone has talked to the Governor about cord blood therapy for the baby - referencing your ping from yesterday about the baby who was treated with it’s own cord blood and nearly all Down’s Syndrome symptoms regressed.

A US State Governor being with child and delivering, while in office, is rather unusual. It's newsworthy in and of itself.

Now if only she hadn’t handicapped him by naming him “Trig.”

What, are the other kids named "Arithemetic", "Geometry", "Algebra" and "Calculus"?

When the water broke she was about to deliver a Republican keynote address in Texas. She finished the speech and then flew back to Alaska, eight hours. She is experienced in these things and wasn’t worried but the second-guessers are out in force saying the airline shouldn’t have flown her in that state. She is back at work and all is well.
