Hint...the mission will never be clarified and therefore funding will never be restored.

Once we shut the shuttle program down, we are completely at the mercy of the Russians. A five year gap or maybe much longer will end any thought of new major funding for manned space flight. The needs of welfare, schools, entitlements of endless nature, etc. will always call louder than the needs for a program that may produce a craft some years in the future.

The Chinese will be on the Moon, Japan will have a permanent orbital station building a Mars mission, India wil be the goto country for sat launches, and we’ll have change. And hope.

In regards to the article...NASA got in trouble when a lot of the people who came on board in the '60s (many for Apollo) started to retire in the '90s - you had a lot of institutional knowledge that was lost. I'm not going to rehash some of the safety issues that arose (since there are other threads about it those issues) but right now we have a lot of the management types who came on in the late 70s/early 80s with the Shuttle program, and the style of engineering they were used to differed dramatically from the Apollo (and older) days, and the same will hold true with the CEV, no matter when it comes online - CEV is a much more simplified system, much more modular (both of which are good attributes in my book, unlike the Shuttle which was a jack of all trades, master of none and which was not capable of being scaled up or down in regards to the mission at hand).

That said, I think that everything Obama and the others talk about in regards to math and science education and getting kids interested is going to be overshadowed by commercial space ventures. I think when they start their sub-orbital shots later this year, and then move to orbital tourism, I think you'll see the interest began to grow quite a bit.

We have to do something though - where we were once a nation of pioneers, we are now a nation of settlers, and it's reflected in our society.

1. This article only addresses the manned program which is wasted money. The unmanned program produces all the science.

2. The Atlas V will be man rated and meet all NASA safety criteria long before 2015.

3. The Ares is in trouble and may not even be viable.

I wouldn’t expect Hussein to support NASA since he hasn’t a clue as to what science and engineering are about—the guy is nothing but a cheesy, cheap, race-baiting, politician lawyer seeking to lord it over whitey.

An occasional drink and swearing don’t have near the detrimental effect on healthcare that people that smoke or practice homosexual behavior or use IV drugs.

Well, if money was diverted from BS science and math such as global climate change to real math and science programs we might find that we have students interested in science and math.

One of the key motivators during the 50s and 60s for kids to go into math and science was the space program — initiated by a GOP administration and hijacked as their own by a corrupt pair of democrats.

He quit that is why. Isn’t it a freedom of choice question. I can’t stand Obama, but let’s not get carried away with your liberalism. No I don’t smoke, but feel that people can if they want without the smoking police always saying snide remarks.
