GREEN & SMART - EARTH-SAVING DONE RIGHT
New York Post ^ | April 22nd, 2008 | GLENN HARLAN REYNOLDS

These are just as worthwhile even if you don't believe that human-created climate change is a big problem, or even a reality.

* Reducing carbon emissions by making people poorer will never happen. Just ask people in China - now the world's No. 1 carbon emitter - how interested they are in returning to the economic conditions they suffered a few decades ago when their carbon emissions were lower.

* Burning fossil fuels is a lousy idea for reasons that have nothing to do with global warming. These hydrocarbons offer important applications as fertilizers and chemical feedstocks, making it foolish to burn them for fuel.

* New technologies are generally cleaner, safer and more efficient than old ones.

Even many scientific champions of global-warming theory are admitting the first point, by shifting their focus from cutting emissions to "geoengineering" - by which they mean responding to global warming by doing things like injecting particulates into the stratosphere to block sunlight, or fertilizing carbon-absorbing algae blooms in the tropical oceans.

These are drastic steps, worth researching in case the worst happens, but nothing we should rush into. But then, impoverishing the world would be a drastic step, too, and it's one that's not likely to sell.

But what if we could reduce greenhouse gases without impoverishing the world? That would be worth doing anyway, because along with those greenhouse gases come all sorts of other nasty substances we're better off without.

Even some environmentalists are already looking to nuclear power as, ironically enough, more environmentally friendly than coal, oil, or natural gas, and we'll likely see more such sentiment in future.

But nuclear power is just a stopgap - as more advanced technologies like nanotechnology offer much greater prospects via solar energy and reduced energy consumption.

why is everyone so obsessed with saving the earth.

when its good and sick of us,, it will hit the reset button and no amount of greenpower or conservation will matter ... if we´re lucky , the mother ship will be in the vicinity and pick up a few of us and help us to just move on. )

Well put! ;o)

I believe the hope is that we can hit ‘Cntrl-Alt-Delete’, and kill the errant processes so we don’t have to ‘restart’ the computer.

We shall see.

No one ever needed a government to FORCE them to do what is in their own best interest. I’m always interested in efficient energy sources.

I'm so sick of this entire "green thing" I immediately shut down upon hearing the word. I've boycotted the color green!

I do not watch TV, but on the rare occasion that I chose to do so I would tune into HGTV. They have gone green.green.green! Between that and turning the female hosts into sluts, I no longer watch it!

If financial reasonable way can be found, I have no problem with keeping pollution and greenhouse emissions low.

This guy just talks about Nuclear Energy as stop gap and jumps right into Nano-Technology.

I agree that Nano-Technology would be the NEXT GREAT AMERICAN ECONOMIC miracle and change the world.

HOWEVER, the only reason Nuclear Energy gets no respect is because people immediately think Hiroshima and Chernobyl.

I consider it absolutely shameful and wrong and immoral that today we get more than half of our Electricity by burning fossil fuels. That should be unacceptable. Aside from damaging enviorment, we are wrecking ourselves financially and strengthing our enemies. By simply increasing our Nuclear Energy Output we can truly have amazing impact, not only enviorment but economy.

But what if we could reduce greenhouse gases without impoverishing the world?

It's not abut impoverishing the world.

Only the United States.

That’s a good point! AlGor says that once we do that, we would have moral authority to ask India and China to do the same.

There is no such thing as greenhouse emissions. Why? Because first of all there is no such thing as global warming. This article which I also post below proves that the Earth is entering a cooling period even as the liberals' "greenhouse emissions" including C02 emissions rise.

The Marxists who proposed this crazy greenhouse emissions theory say that carbon dioxide is turning the earth into a greenhouse, trapping heat on earth. That's totally ridiculous. We humans breathe out CO2 and plants use our CO2. That is not a pollutant as the Supreme Court has now said CO2 is. Carbon dioxide has never driven climate . We are now entering a cooling period when "carbon" emission have risen as the article I show below proves. Also there have been much longer periods in history where CO2 concentrations and "emissions" were much higher than today and the Earth was cooler.

The free market (capitalism) finds the most efficient and productive use for natural resource. "We" (the government) should not and cannot decide what resources should be used for what purpose. This does not work as proven by the collapse of the Soviet Union and failure of government planning and ownership (socialism) everywhere.

"Global COOLING Currently Under Way

Excerpt: All four major global temperature tracking outlets (Hadley, NASA’s GISS, UAH, RSS) have released updated data. All show that over the past year, global temperatures have dropped precipitously. A compiled list of all the sources can be seen here. The total amount of cooling ranges from 0.65C up to 0.75C — a value large enough to erase nearly all the global warming recorded over the past 100 years"

Capitalism works amazingly well if government gets out of the way(technology is expanding at an exponential rate among the technology industries). Capitalism works so well because there are millions of consumers and businesses making real time decisions based on what is of more value to them. One government bureaucrat can never have this knowledge of all these millions working together to make all these decisions that run the economy and he can never have their motivation (no one spends some one else's money as carefully as their own).

The liberals/Marxists in the media and Democrat part are using the global warming hoax to grow the power and size of government, to increase government control over industries and our lives, to cripple capitalism with more regulations, all to achieve their goal of a socialist state.

Just a question. Is uranium a sufficiently obtainable supply? I don't how much is burned worldwide daily. Whenever there's a solution there comes another question.

I think so. Lots of tiny nations in Africa are loaded with it. We give them aid to not exploit it.

Yes for now, I was listening to a “pro” talking about the Peak Oil theory and he mentioned that nuclear reserves are dwindling also. That's why I asked the second part. Does anyone know how much uranium is burned daily in nuclear plants worldwide? Also are we ever in danger of a future UPEC?
