INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - A burglar messed with the wrong man Monday morning when he broke into an eastside home. The situation got bad enough for the burglar that he feared the home owner was going to kill him.
The incident is likely to be tough for the suspect to explain to the guys in jail or out.
He was beaten-up by a man who's legally blind.
There's no question that Allan Kieta's vision is limited. But, when the dog started barking, this morning, the burglar didn't know that.
"And when I opened my bedroom door and stepped out into the hallway, I just ran into him. I think he was as startled as I was," said Kieta.
Kieta's battered knuckles are evidence of the struggle that followed.
"I kinda grabbed him. He took a swing and I took a swing and then I got him down on the floor. Once I got him down on the floor, I wouldn't let him up and I just kept doing everything I could to him."
Kieta's not sure how long they fought.
"I got him into the kitchen and I got the knife, first, and once I got the knife then we went looking for the phone."
Kieta grabbed the knife and while holding the man's throat, he was able to dial 911.
"I pulled it up really tight and was trying to do it. I guess he realized then that he was really in...So, yeah, he offered to dial it for me. He was just like Don't kill me. I'll dial it'."
Kieta walked the man to the front door and waited. Police arrived soon after and asked Kieta to put down the knife. Once Kieta was sure police had the man, he turned over the knife.
Kieta said the adrenaline has worn off and he's starting to feel sore from the struggle. He added that Monday was supposed to be a chance to enjoy his day off and sleep late.
Ya know, I think this is one time the burglar might have learned his lesson.
Amazing !!!
Indeed. In the Indianapolis paper (which we cannot post), the story mentioned that the blind guy was the 1976 Kentucky state wrestling champion. The burglar clearly picked the wrong house.
Some people get very crabby when they are sleep-thwarted!
One thing about being legally blind is that self-defence is practically an insuperable protection in law.
Here in the lamentably twitchy UK, a legally blind man knifed an intruder to death - and (rightly) was exonerated of all possible blame.
That’s good to hear.
One of my all time favorite movies...along with “immitation of life”
(Criminals...don't come here. The rest of us have eyesight).
I'd like to see it again but don't know how it would be on the small screen. Back then, in the theater, that one scene had the audience up off their (our) seats.
