How the world was misled about global warming and now climate change
Canada Free Press ^ | 4/21/08 | Tim Ball

Once you realize humans are not causing global warming and/or climate change, then you need an explanation for how and why so many people appear to think they are. In two previous articles (Environmental Extremism and Historical and philosophical context of the climate change debate.) we examined the philosophical and historical context of climate change and specifically the focus on humans as the cause.

We explained the philosophical concept of uniformitarianism that dominates western science; the incorrect idea that change is gradual over long periods of time. We looked at how the scientific method of testing the theory that human CO2 was causing warming/climate change was effectively bypassed. Now we need to examine how politics took over climate science through exploitation of public fear and lack of knowledge.

Agreed. I meant to post my #79 to you—not sure what happened there.

There’s enough trees and ocean to filter the carbon dioxide.

Hawking's is a very good physicist, not a climate expert. Physics is a piece of cake compared to climatology.

93 million miles away is an 800,000 mile wide ball of nuclear fission. Do you think that might have something to do with our climate? The energy output of the Sun is not, was not and never will be constant. Slight changes in the energy output of the Sun result in big changes in the Earths climate. 400 million years ago the Earth was a frozen snow ball. 12,000 years ago (and for most of the last million years) there was a mile of ice on what is now New York City. If I were you I would worry much more about a new Ice Age, which is looking more and more likely, then about a little warming. Hell a little warming would probably be a good thing.

Some say that if you limit amount of CO2 that you release in the year, you can prevent the Polar Caps from melting. Thus the efforts underway to keep the planet the way we know it. Otherwise, there it would just be different and that will be that.

all true, and beyond dispute.

The real question is, did humans cause the demise of the Incas? Probably, but not all humans.
Did humans cause all of the previous ice sheets? Probably not.
Do humans have any substantive control over global climate changes? Probably not.

But the definitive answer may never be determined. In the meantime, nut cases argue Edgar Cayce...

Ok, let’s say that you limit amount of CO2 that you release in the year, you prevent the Polar Caps from melting and are successful in keeping the planet the way we know it. The Chinese, Indians and Africans continue to breed like rabbits. With 80% of the arable land on this planet too cold to farm, how are you going to feed them? Are you or any of the other global warming faithful prepared to accept mass starvation and millions of deaths in your quest to keep things the same?

More important, as a Christian, do you trust God? He has seen fit to populate this planet with human beings with brains that surpass any others in creation. Did he make a mistake in not planning for an explosive growth in population along with the technology that goes with the brain power that he provided? (Check out Matthew 6:25-34)

I also invite you to research past climate records. If you do, one thing will become very clear. Climate changes, it has always been changing and will continue to change. There has never been in recorded or measured history a time where temperature or sea level has been flat. The animals and plants that had the ability to change and adapt have survived, the ones that cannot are extinct. If mankind is to survive, we must put our efforts in learning to adapt to our ever changing earth, not in stopping the change.

"If I were you I would worry much more about a new Ice Age, which is looking more and more likely,..."

Is this a reference to the recent significant decrease noticed in sun-spot activity? I've been wondering about this myself, as I keep seeing references to it, though its usually buried somewhere in the back section of the newspaper, magazine, etc.

From what I've read, it's still been too short a period of inactivty to make any conclusions, but everyone involved does seem to agree that if this really is the beginning of a significant down cycle, it's going to get colder, NOTICEABLY COLDER!

I gotta believe Newt, McQueeg, Bush etc have seen the light. ie The Climate Change gambit is so powerful it cannot be beaten so they are just joining.

I feel like I'm in world inhabited by a drug-induced mindset. "This is your brain; this is your brain on drugs." Has the integrity portion of their brains been fried?

“You don’t fight fraud by admitting that it is a “serious problem”. Sorry, the GOP is complicit in this crap.”

Sorry, you are clueless. Not only did Pres Bush stand up to it under considerable pressure, but the Republicans in Congress have been battling against it. Check out Sen Inhofe’s statements.

Also, you use the term “fraud” loosely. Most are sincere in what they believe on this. It’s not a fraud but self-delusion and hype that has gotten out of control. And it is based on true elements.

"Improper amount of CO2, can trap too much heat and cause melting of large ice-masses"

Actually no (and I am a math guy). What is alleged is that too much CO2 will cause increased levels of water vapor (water vapor, is a much more effective green house gas then CO2). This increased water vapor is suppost to rise high into the atmosphere and stay there trapping heat and warming the Earth. However, it turns out that the water vapor turns into rain at mid level altitude and has a cooling effect not a warning effect!

You mentioned Viking settlements under the ice in Green land. Hmmm, why would the Viking of 1,000 years ago build settlements under the ice? Could it be that the Earth was warmer (much warmer) a 1000 years ago?

“There are many scientists who argue that there is absolutely no proof OF MAN-MADE Global warming. ... Many scientists believe the effects of the Sun are not being accounted for. “

The key question is - are they right?
‘Many scientists’ also sit on IPCC. That panel may be corrupted, biased or wrong, but they are the ‘authorities’ that others are using to hype global warming.

We need to be explaining, understanding and expressing what is really going on.

” CO2 is an essential part of life, not a pollutant. “ - This should be a known fact to everyone.

Sen Inhofe is superb. Don’t lump the rest of the GOP in that category.

Bush thinks the fraud is real. Newt thinks so. Romney and Huck and Fred and Rudy all think so. Arnold thinks so. McCain is downright ALgorian on the subject. So who in leadership is standing with Inhofe?

Three theories (one maybe debunked?) pointed at global cooling.
1) decreased Solar energy 2) increase in rainfall 3) increase cloud cover due to decrease in Solar output(debunked?)

And of course the oceanic heat conveyor belt will fail theory.

So we have lots of good science pointing at possible cooling and lots of not so good science pointing at global warming.

The Earth (IMHO) has never experienced run away global warming, the mass extinction of 225 million years ago was caused by an impact event just like the one 65 million years ago only bigger. However the Earth has experienced or at least came very very close to run away global cooling (see snowball earth). We might be alot closer to an ice age then we think. We are 15,000 years into an inner glacial that should last 20,000 years but there is no grantee that it can't end tomorrow.

“I gotta believe Newt, McQueeg, Bush etc have seen the light. ie The Climate Change gambit is so powerful it cannot be beaten so they are just joining. Given the DC elite’s (I not longer see the Rats as the true enemy of freedom) near total control of big media and the education system their propaganda machine is unstopable.”

Here’s plan B:

1) DELAY regulations. We have been playing the ‘we need more science’ card since the mid 1990s. Guess what - it is true and it works! We are already seeing, as the actual temps fail to confirm the models, that the models have to be scaled back. So the threat is actually measured as less than it was 10 years back.
2) SUPPORT NUCLEAR. You can expose environmentalist hypocrites quickly by touting safe, clean, economical nuclear power.

“The GOP must be replaced. I was hoping Dr. James Dobson was going to do it a few months back but he chickened out. Dobson could take the entire Evangelical Christian coalition out of Republican Party and form a new Third Party. Which would soon become the new Conservative Party and the GOP would die a swift death. Dobson could do it. I can’t think of a single other person who could.”
Idiotic idea. I am glad Dobson has the sense to reject such a counterproductive suggestion.

“What it would do is destroy the GOP. THAT would be very much worth doing. ...Traitors need to be hung.” Slanderers needs to get a tongue-lashing. You slander the GOP.

You are exactly right that I slander the GOP. I can’t begin to describe how much that damnable bunch sickens me. The Republican party is a miserable failure and now have become traitors to this nation. A party of thieves. A gaggle of self-important elitists. If there is any possibility of EVER having a national conservative party again .... it will only be through starting over. It is possible that an honest true conservative party might eventually attract even a majority of voters though given the general debauched condition of our once great nation I doubt it. But if no one stands up with a banner to follow and a clarion call to heed .... there is no hope.

I would certainly believe Mr. Hawkins in matter of quantum physics and theoretical quantum and celestial mechanics, black holes. But never about food production, climate or social dynamics. That is simply not his field.

Do you think Hawkins could help me learn a guitar solo? He's so gosh darn smart I bet he could teach me the solo to "November Rain." Since he has one of the most brilliant minds of all time it should be easy for him!

Theorists treat decadal events as though they are as dire and imminent as daily weather forecasts or hourly tornado tracking.
Caution has been thrown to the winds of passion.

You are being extremely kind. It's not like you to bow to the PC impulse. Theorists (self-styled 'scientists') are driving themselves into a new Dark Age and joining the herd embracing hysteria instead of classical science.
Just reading this thread demonstrates how successful they have been.

Do you have any thoughts on the movie "Expelled?"
