MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. Many parts of America, long considered the breadbasket of the world, are now confronting a once unthinkable phenomenon: food rationing. Major retailers in New York, in areas of New England, and on the West Coast are limiting purchases of flour, rice, and cooking oil as demand outstrips supply. There are also anecdotal reports that some consumers are hoarding grain stocks.
At a Costco Warehouse in Mountain View, Calif., yesterday, shoppers grew frustrated and occasionally uttered expletives as they searched in vain for the large sacks of rice they usually buy.
Wheres the rice? an engineer from Palo Alto, Calif., Yajun Liu, said. You should be able to buy something like rice. This is ridiculous.
The bustling store in the heart of Silicon Valley usually sells four or five varieties of rice to a clientele largely of Asian immigrants, but only about half a pallet of Indian-grown Basmati rice was left in stock. A 20-pound bag was selling for $15.99. * * *
On Coast to Coast AM Saturday night the guest was Steve Quayle. I heard only a few minutes of the interview. I thought he had gone over the top wacko because he was talking about empty store shelves, hyper-inflation and wheat and rice being impossible to buy.
The cause is Ben Bernanke's stupidity, the insane cost of oil and our monopoly money economy. In other words, our fiat currency has gone wild.
Now this NY Sun report was at the TOP on Drudge.
Quayle actually recommended buying rice in bulk and storing it in your garage or under your bed.
This shiite is flowing too fast and getting too deep for me . . . Yada, Yada . . Nothing to see here. Time to move on.
Yep, back to the days of two mules, a wagon and a big straw hat...
Revelation 6:6 (New International Version)
New International Version (NIV)
6Then I heard what sounded like a voice among the four living creatures, saying, “A quart[a] of wheat for a day’s wages,[b] and three quarts of barley for a day’s wages,[c] and do not damage the oil and the wine!”
“The government should not be in the business of subsidizing anything, Food, energy, or housing. Once you start down that road, and weve been on it for long time, it cannot be stopped. Why should I give ADM my tax dollars to grow or NOT grow anything? Why should I give my tax dollars to the sugar cane growers of south Florida? Why should I give my tax dollars to anybody for anything? If the market is there, subsidies are not necessary. Subsidies are just another name for bribes and kickbacks. Corruption by lawmakers thru legislative fiat.........”
You will get no argument from me as long as a single industry is not picked for demise while subsidies for the rest continue. That is all I hear these days: subsidies for Ethanol are bad while every poster to date says naught about the 1000s of other subsidies that remain. How many small-to-medium towns in the US don’t provide subsidies to attract industry? Ans: only those with no industry.
MSM is reporting complaints of food hoarding by major food distributors world-wide. Reason given is they are holding stocks in hope of further price increases. Sounds to be bogus or flat propaganda or pretext for police action.
It would be very hard to implement alternatives nationwide without some government involvement. People won't like driving H2 cars if they can't refuel them outside their city.
While ethanol was a scam by big oil and farm lobbyists, it also showed how the government can help push an alternative fuel nationwide. The only problem is they pushed the wrong fuel and government is full of thieves and idiots.
Is there a one of the three serious presidential candidates who is not spouting “let us put windmills in our cars” nonsense?
Do you believe the MSM are buying rice in bulk _________? The reports are true. Store shelves were empty of rice today at 7:00 AM.
I’m going to make a 30 mile trip today to refill my gas cans with non ethanol gasoline.
Japan is also way ahead of us on decentralized nuclear, offering to put pilot plants in our Alaskan villages for free to demonstrate the technology and on so-called “free” energy. We have now decided that the leadership in what is actually needed we will undertake in Free Asia, not here.
Are you mixing terminologies up? Subsidies are monies paid out directly to a business or individual, whereas tax incentives are monies not paid to the government in lieu of a quid pro quo. Many towns or counties regularly give property tax breaks for 20 years or so to attract new industries to their area. Case in point, Broward county gave Motorola a 20 year property tax break to build a new plant there back in the 60’s. When the 20 years were up, guess what? THEY MOVED to the county next door for another 20 year break!.......
Coast Saturday night probably scared a bunch of folks into buying a lot of rice. The guest recommended filling the space under the bed with 50 pound sacks of rice.
Oops, too late. I just checked & that county went ethanol contamination last week. Well, there still is a 2-300 mile trip to Eastern Oregon until september.
The exchange of money is the same. I don’t care what you label it—it is still financial incentive whether it be; money in your pocket from not paying a fair share of taxes, or tax money coming back to the producer of goods.
Where do you stand on subsidizing old age?? If someone has paid $2,000 into SS and collects say, $3000 in benefits as a fair return on their investment, should they lose future subsidies?
Guess somebody needs to sue you know who __________ ? Yaaahoooo !
A combination I have been fearing for a few years now: socialized medicine, then food shortages. Control the medicine, control the food, control the people. This is how the 3rd world dictators do it.
Music Video: "With Every Breath Bernanke Takes" . . . Enjoy !
Half of the people in this country could probably afford $5 gas, the other half could not. So we know what happens next. Those driving SUV’s and affording it will be taxed to supplement the poor rather than letting the poor walk, bike, car pool, bus, or train.
RE :”The government should not be in the business of subsidizing anything,”
Maybe it’s just where I live, Maryland, but it appears that americans, partly due to public schools, believe that fed govmt can fix ANYTHING with enough power and money, but more so with the RIGHT leaders. So the search for the morally (socially) pure and smart leader who will SAVE us. And here comes Obama throwing out religious type lines as our PURE liberal saviour. Lib media says it’s the youth vote pushing this guy more than anyone.
Bush really didnt help things, he promoted this myth.
