Octopus twirl now illegal, punishable by $10,000 fine (NHL)

Posted by George James Malik April 19, 2008 08:29AM According to the Free Press's Helene St. James, the NHL has banned Al Sobotka's classic twirling of octopi at Joe Louis Arena:

April 18, Detroit Free Press: Just a little tidbit from Joe Louis Arena: The NHL has decided octopus twirling doesn't fit in with league image, or something to that effect.

The Wings have been told by the league that if Al Sobotka (or anyone else) twirls the octopus that's thrown onto the ice before playoff games, it'll cost the team $10,000.

I know opposing general managers have complained of this tradition because stuff flies off the octopus and sticks to the ice, but this is such a recognizable Detroit tradition.

One landed, just after the game, on the ice before Game 5, as usual. Nashville defenseman Greg Zanon skated by and whacked it aside with his stick.

........

Chris Osgood describes the situation as any Red Wings fan would:

"Certain teams and certain traditions, they should just leave them alone," the Wings' Chris Osgood said. "It's a shame. It's great for the atmosphere, and the fans love it. The league should ask the fans first before they do anything. That's who pays to get into the rink and see the game."

The Michigan Economy stinks, Red Wing Ticket Sales are down, so where does the disposable income come from to pick up a little calamari to toss around?

Oh BTW....

More good news.

The Famous Christmas Shop in Frannkenmuth may move out of state because of the screwed up business tax. http://www.bronners.com/

For you geeky linguists out there, octopi is not the plural of octopus. Some idiot thought it followed the Latin -us/-i scheme. But it’s a Greek word — so the classical plural is octopodes.

So, you're one of the infamous three, eh? You, nObama and Grand Wizard Robert C. Byrd of the West Virginnie Grand Chapter.

... and not only that, it’s not a classical greek word. I guess they weren’t so concerned about the exact number of tentacles, because they called it the polypous - it’s in Homer, The Odyssey Book 5.432, where it’s written poulypodos. ( A very interesting passage, actually. )

( Any knowledge of greek I may have comes from poking through Homer. )

Octopus twirl, dead cat bounce, dog days of summer, wabbit season, no, duck season.

Duck season ended tonight, courtesy of the Dallas Stars.

I ehard that the tradition is older than that, and stems from the Wings ebing one of the original eight North American teams.

I love apocrypha, and I love tradition, and there will always be flinging octopi in Hockeytown!

None of those threads belong here either. As for "pimping," judging by your appearance as a loser, you and the Clintons are familiar with that lifestyle.

see, now that’s an uncalled called for, baseless personal attack.
Seriously, talk about the kind of things that don’t belong on a conservative website.

Please re-read the article and consider legal code. The act is not illegal it is simply banned by the NHL.

I remember when the owners of the Red Wings use to haul out a huge octopus before the game. This is just ridiculous.

Gary Bettmen should frolic off to some ballet venue and leave hockey to the fans.

That was MLIVE’s title, not mine. I’m in the legal field myself and would have used the termed banned instead of illegal, but the mods frown on changing the title. That’s why I added “NHL” to avoid confusion.
