CAIRO, Egypt A man claiming to be the leader of Al Qaeda in Iraq vowed in an audiotape released Saturday to launch a monthlong offensive against U.S. troops.
There was no independent confirmation that the voice belonged to Abu Hamza al-Muhajir, also known as Abu Ayyub al-Masri, but it sounded exactly like the one heard on previous audiotapes.
Al-Muhajir has been the leader of Al Qaeda in Iraq since his predecessor Abu Musab al-Zarqawi was killed in a U.S. airstrike northeast of Baghdad in 2006.
"We call on our beloved ones ... that each unit should present the head of an American as a gift to the charlatan Bush ... in addition to one of the apostate servants and slaves of the awakening (councils) during a one-month period," he said in the tape, posted on an Internet site known for its militant contents.

Planed for October?

> Really stupid tactics. This is why they are losing so badly. Guerrillas need either the support of, or the neutrality of, the locals to be effective
Maybe not so stupid. Iraq is 20% Sunni, they used to be in power and were supplanted by the Shiite majority. If al Qaeda carry out this threat in the Sunni part of Iraq (the middle third, geographically-speaking) it may be seen as a liberating move by the supplanted Sunni majority in that region.
I suggest the Shiite government respond to this threat by waterboarding each al Qaeda operative it captures for any useful information, giving them a summary trial before a military tribunal, then hanging them from construction cranes in the public square — all within the space of one day of capture.
If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em.
The Awakening Councils are Sunni. Al Qeda are not only picking a fight with the Shia Govt forces, but with the local Sunni milita units.
“Planed for October?”
Looks like AQ got the mule driven memo from the DNC in plenty of time to bloody up the place right before the elections.
I’m working on a nice, new toy that will render this fat pig Al Sadr and his minions into hamburger.
