And, if you take a leftist view of the world,
it’s good that some other country has a more powerful military than the USA.
With a base out in the middle of nowhere, any vehicle traffic in the area is assumed to be traffic to/from the base. A base in an area with a lot of non-military vehicle traffic can hide its activity better by using civilian-appearing vehicles to transport its personnel and supplies
I'm a bit shakey with the concept of moving a nuclear sub through a tourist infested bay without notice.
You're suggesting it's entirely submerged??
Yeah, I looked at it on Google Earth and it very obvious what it is. I only see one point of exit for the subs themselves and about 8 land tunnels to the east of that point of entry. You can tell it’s a pretty large underground complex.
When the gloves come off, I believe America (what's left of it anyway) will ultimately prevail over the Chinese Communist state. Whether a diminished nuclear wasteland of the US would be leader of the free world versus the powers that remain (Euroland, the Caliphate, India, Russia, etc) I have no idea. A "free" post-Communist China might also eat our lunch if long-term education trends continue.
To repeat, there are all kinds of things we are not mentioning now because they would not be talked about in a peacetime/relaxed environment. For example, I understand that a good portion of the Chinese military runs on (buggy, virus-strewn) Microsoft software. In wartime, who knows what will happen to that (software intended to identify friendly Chicoms to their own targeting scanners could suddenly and inexplicably tag it as enemy). And I think our cyberwarfare will ultimately dominate China's in the event of war, not just because we invented the internet but because we will be able to hire/enlist deniable third parties to assist (Indian, Bulgarian, wherever hackers, Tibetan hackers if any exist).
Still not a good future though. Would be encouraged if we ramped up our building of attack subs.
Wow, thread from the past...:)
Overall, I think we’re doing exactly what needs to happen - build up the economy and middle class of China (yes, there is a growing middle class) and tie China’s future to ours. We succeed, they succeed. We fail, they fail. Ultimately tight trade partners never fight wars - skirmishes, feints over trade sure. But not wars. Too costly to both sides.
