Democratic Operative Takes on McCain's Age
The Washington Post ^ | April 17, 2008 | Chris Cillizza

" Despite a recent promise from Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean not to make Sen. John McCain's age -- he turns 72 in August -- an issue in the presidential campaign, a senior Democratic operative has started a new website designed to draw attention to just that fact.

Called "Younger than McCain", the website is being run by Steve Rosenthal, a former political director at the AFL-CIO and executive director of America Coming Together, a massive soft money effort organized around the 2004 presidential race. Rosenthal is now a partner in The Organizing Group."

A partial transcript of the ad:

FEMALE VOICE: With all this Obama, Hillary, Obama, Hillary, I forget -- isn't there another guy running, too?

MALE VOICE: Yeah, John Sidney McCain. But no one's really paying attention to him because he's kinda old.

FEMALE VOICE: He did say he's older than dirt.

MALE VOICE: Well, not as old as dirt, but he's older than a lot of things. Um, he's older than my father.

FEMALE VOICE: Well, he's older than my grandfather.

A couple of points:

1) A Democrat's promise is written on ice.

2) The ad is pretty funny. Pubbies don't mind laughing at themselves

Yeah but I would rather take advise from my grandfather than my nephew.

Especially if your "uncle" was a known quantity and your "nephew" had been away for a long time and working overtime to hide his activities and associates.

The ad is funny. And I think its message will eventually irritate the demographic that votes in the largest numbers. I hope to see a lot more of this stuff.

Aren't older people a Dem-leaning group? This would be a great time to chip away at that...

"The Democrat party says that older Americans like John McCain have nothing to offer this nation..." (Play some clips)

Older American 1 playing golf, "So, you don't remember Vietnam and the Weathermen and you want to lecture me?"

Older American 2 doing aerobics, "I changed diapers for for kids your age and you think I'm bitter. Kid, I'm just hitting my stride."

Older American 3 bowling a strike, "Hey kid, don't lecture me on being too old, or on bowling."

Add a few more, and Voila - Landslide.

The ad is funny. Could you imagine a lib/lefty ever laughing about a political attack ad on a Democrat?

Actually, the “bigoted libs”” are telling the truth, a fact that we are going to have to live with. McCain is old!

You’d be surprised at how willing and eager Obama supporters are to say that older people’s opinions don’t matter. That they, being young and internet savvy, are the ones whose opinions matters.

I do believe it’s gonna get very very messy before it’s all over in November.

I wonder if they will run this ad at the AARP convention, followed by scenes from Logan's Run and Lord of the Flies.

Older American 4 shooting skeet - “Bitter, No. Willing and able to defend my rights - Hell yes.”

Older American 5 holding a picture of herself at a Civil Rights March - “Don’t lecture me on race. I was marching when you were 6.”

Change "Obama" to "McGovern" and "internet savvy" to "more enlightened" and it is 1972 once more.

October 28, 1984, the second presidential debate...

Henry Trewhitt, Baltimore Sun: “Mr. President, I want to raise an issue that I think has been lurking out there for two or three weeks, and cast it specifically in national security terms. You already are the oldest President in history, and some of your staff say you were tired after your most recent encounter with Mr. Mondale. I recall, yes, that President Kennedy, who had to go for days on end with very little sleep during the Cuba missile crisis. Is there any doubt in your mind that you would be able to function in such circumstances?”

Ronald Reagan: “Not at all, Mr. Trewhitt, and I want you to know that also I will not make age an issue of this campaign. I am not going to exploit for political purposes my opponent’s youth and inexperience. If I still have time, I might add, Mr. Trewhitt, I might add that it was Seneca or it was Cicero, I don’t know which, that said if it was not for the elders correcting the mistakes of the young, there would be no state.”

(Somebody’s going to say that John McCain’s no Ronald Reagan. My reply is that—particularly in length and depth of experience—Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama are no Fritz Mondales, so let’s call it even.)

Berlusconi was just elected in Italy — he is 71. I heard no sniveling about HIS age.

>> Aren’t older people a Dem-leaning group? This would be a great time to chip away at that...

Exactly.

Not only do older folks lean Dem — they VOTE. Reliably.

If Hillary gets the nom, painting John McCain as “too old” might not cause too much harm (for the Dems). She wins among the older demographic already. But it won’t help her either.

If Obama gets the nod, it would be a disastrous meme for the Dems. It would drive many older voters — who already distrust Obama — straight to McCain.

And, again — they DO vote.

BTW, I like your ad ideas, and there are dozens more where those came from!
