Why Democrats Rule the Web

"People were just getting together on their own," remembers Tom. "I guess you could call it grass roots."

Like thousands of others, Tom downloaded phone lists so he could cold-call potential supporters in the area. Mary spent hours typing names and addresses into Obama's national database.

The first paid operatives finally arrived in the area weeks later, only to find a virtually organized Obama machine already up and running. When the campaign held its first statewide training sessions in March, some 2,000 people turned up.

It has gone on like this all year for Obama as his campaign deftly exploits the biggest technological shift in national politics since the rise of television. For millions of Americans, the Internet has turned presidential politics into a fully interactive event.

In February alone Hillary Clinton was able to attract 200,000 new donors, most of them online, rescuing her campaign from the brink of bankruptcy. Obama has amassed an army of 750,000 supporters who have signed on to his website and participated in 30,000 offline events. Obama's online fund-raising eclipsed the $100 million mark in the first three months of the year, and his YouTube videos have been viewed 37 million times, a figure that would make any television executive weep.

Though both Democrats have shown the ability to raise bigmoney online, McCain has been struggling to catch Internet fever.

While his rivals rake in bundles of cash in small-dollar checks, McCain makes the rounds of hotel ballrooms, charming wealthy donors with traditional chicken dinners and fruit-platter mixers.

In March he attended 26 fund raisers in 24 cities, raising about $15 million, with roughly one-third of it coming from the Web. Obama attended just six events in the same period, yet his campaign raised three times as much, 2 mostly online.

"Time for "Its Raining McCain" girls to put out a new video!"

Let's hope the McCain girls enjoy their freedom of speech free from the Washington insiders who are pining to squelch their freedom during campaign season. I forgot the name of those two tyrant Senators who have content for the 1st Amendment...I can't remember their names at the moment

Let's also hope that the McCain girls don't cause global warming while doing their routine.

How ironic — and wonderful — that McCain-Feingold will hurt McCain far more than Hillary or Obama.

Is there a way to donate without disclosing your personal information? I donated 200 bucks to McCain and had to give all the information you give when you charge your credit card. Same as FR.

I have heard this before that Obama was getting donations from Middle East.

Well, 527s can slam anyone so there are options out there.

Freinds Of Earth - they have been slandering McCain recently. I don’t know who they are, but yesterday in San Jose California area, I saw 4 different commercials.

They accuse him of giving away TRILLION dollars to Polluters and planning to give away BILLIONS more.

It was also interesting that all they had to say about Nuclear Energy was that its DANGEROUS.

Obama talks about Nuclear Energy as well. Does he know a less dangerous form?

FOE - Freind of Earth - truly are FOEs of honesty and character.

And how much of Obama’s money is under the table illegal campaign contributions from fat cat campaign bundlers sliding in under the FEC’s $200 Campaign Finance Radar by parting out their donations ala Hsu and the Buddist Monks of Clinton fame?

Liberals have two candidates to enthusiastically support.

Conservatives have no candidate to support.

because on the web it is super easy to conceal the source of donors.

MoveOn.Soros got caught accepting illegal foreign contributions in 2004.

Add to that online poll “voting” by people who cannot vote in our elections, commentary posts on news sites, coordinating meetups, etc.

There are lots of things international socialists can do for Socialist Democrats that are not financial but have value. Like contribute commercials and man hours.

Next the french will be voting in our election.

"RNC folks called yesterday for a donation: I hung up on them."

I hope to get the same opportunity.

My congressman John Carter, and Senator John Cornyn is what Republicans used to be. They still deserve my support 100%.
