Here's the Beef: Conservatives' Problems With John McCain
Conservative HQ.com ^ | 4-16-08 | Richard Viguerie

John McCain is a hero for his service in Vietnam. Most conservatives would be thrilled to support him, if only he would give them reason to.

Why is it that conservatives have such a hard time lining up behind John McCain, the presumptive Republican nominee for president? Is it, as some liberals suggest, just "pique" -- that we didn't get our way, and now we're throwing a tantrum? Or are the differences between McCain and conservatives very real, very serious matters that go to the heart of the principles of conservatism?

The truth is that the differences with McCain are real. They involve matters of policy, of personnel ("Who will make decisions in a McCain administration?"), and of insights into the Senator's thinking about conservatives and the issues important to conservatives.

The biggest complaints expressed by conservatives are these:

SUPREME COURT: Perhaps conservatives' biggest issue is whether future appointments to the Supreme Court and lower courts will be in the mold of Justices David Souter, John Paul Stevens, and William Brennan -- left-wingers appointed by Republican presidents -- or in the mold of distinguished conservatives such as Justice Clarence Thomas and Justice Antonin Scalia.

It may be that even a moderate conservative such as Samuel Alito would be "too" conservative for John McCain. According to John Fund of The Wall Street Journal, McCain, in private conversations with lawyers, "indicated he might draw the line on a Samuel Alito because 'he [Alito] wore his conservatism on his sleeve.'"

And, although McCain has promised to appoint conservative judges to the Supreme Court, that's highly unlikely, because conservative judges would overturn the Senator's proudest achievement, McCain-Feingold.

And, Thompson shafted himself!

He proved that he is lazy.

"You are correct. The best thing for real conservatives and the future of conservatism in this country is for MacNutJob to lose the White House and the GOP to hold power in The House and Senate."

Oh yes, a hostile congress can effectively reign in most Democrat schemes, but congress doesn't set foreign policy. I do NOT see how either of the terrorist loving, Maoists running on the Democrat ticket will aid with our long term welfare. I don't see how wondering when it'll be OUR turn to be waco-ed will help US at all.

I can understand why people have problems with McCain. I do myself. But I’ll be voting for him in November because the alternative is just too scarey.

immigration policy
Guantanamo
terrorist interrogations
Supreme Court nominees
mental stability
McCain-Feingold
etc.
etc.

Thompson got in to the race to late then failed to lay out a message.
Yes he had a very strong conservative voting record but expressed no vision.

Hillary was always a flawed candidate. Obama’s success says more about how weak a candidate Hillary is than how strong Obama is. A first term junior senator from Illinois has taken on the Clinton political machine and won. I think most Dems want to get out from under the Clintons who have been running the party for 16 years. They can’t bear another eight years and perhaps a lifetime if Hillary gets elected.

Best line in the article came last:

He desperately needs conservatives to unite behind his candidacy, but seems content to rely on his status as the presumed lesser-of-two-evils. And that fact alone tells you everything you need to know about John "I'm a conservative" McCain.

"Presumed" indeed. He needs to give solid and convincing reasons why conservatives should support him, not allow his handlers and RINOs to merely urge him as the "only alternative." After all, Bob Dole and George H.W. Bush already tried that ploy and instead we got two terms of BJ Clinton.

He expressed no vision because he was never shown anywhere to express...

he was hardly ever on cable, network tv...anywhere...It was like he was media blackballed...

Once I remember on FOX they had Guliani listed first, Romney second, Thompson thrid and McCain fourth...The picture shown with the poll had Guliani, Romney, and McCain...no Thompson anywhere...

"McCain immediately attacked Bush for his opposition to adding exceptions for rape and incest to the pro-life plank in the Republican platform."

It's hard to consider that an "attack" on Bush's pro life platform. What's our alternative? Hillary's husband's agenda was geared toward murdering as many babies as possible, to provide raw materials for the white elephant of fetal stem cell research and there's no reason to believe Hillary didn't support that 100 percent. Obama is at LEAST as pro death as Billary.

I suspect your post is deliberately slanted. There is no gain from reading it. It teaches nothing and ignores the fact that the rabidly pro-abortion candidates would, if elected, not exactly save the lives of any unborn infants.

You may be misunderstanding. I specified a hostile congress of conservatives to counter McCain. Democrats aren't hostile to McCain.

"Why did he wait so long to get in and why did he skip the first debate and when he finally came on the scene he spent a day or two in Iowa and than ran home and took a vacation. It’s called a campaign not a coronation."

We have never before had an election cycle forced to start a year ahead of time. The "first debate" was not an official debate. The idea was to make voters tired, stay home, and allow Hillary to win. Good lord, you fell for the entire strategy!

To add to your astute observation, what kind of “debate” can you have when there are 10 or more “debaters”??? better to wait until the field is trimmed a mite, don’t you think?

I have been receiving emails and letters from McCain. No contributions or a vote from me. I will vote straight GOP on the rest of the ticket, but I won’t be complicit in electing anyone who supports amnesty.

same old bla-bla-bla...

Pretty good description of your post, I agree.

Bottom line: McCain hates abortion,

Really? Than why did he push through McCain-Feingold, which guts the ability of pro-life groups to exercise their right to free speech? Why does he think states' rights trump the unalienable right to life, in direct contradiction to the Reagan pro-life platform? Why does he support the destruction of human embryos and the use of the bodies of aborted babies for scientific experimentation and the use of taxpayer funds to support Planned Parenthood?

McCain hates pork barrel spending.

Amazing, considering the amount of it he's garnered for his state throughout his career.

the rest is just speculation on your part.

Wrong. Every word I've said is fact, easily obtainable to anyone who can type key words into a search engine.

Or? are you a Democrat trying to fire-up those on the fence?

No. I oppose Democrats. Which is why I oppose John McCain.
