VILLANOVA, Pa. - Rarely does John McCain not have an answer.
But two questions, about race and drinking, caught him off guard Tuesday during his stop on MSNBC's "Harball College Tour" at Villanova University.
One student questioner raised Democrat Barack Obama's comment about his grandmother being "a typical white person" and asked McCain: "Would you characterize yourself, as Barack Obama would phrase, as a typical white person?"
An amused McCain paused and praised Obama's recent "excellent" speech on race, saying "it was good for all of America to have heard it."
"I can't comment directly as to how I portray myself," the likely Republican presidential nominee said. "So I'm sorry if I basically ducked the question, but I want to say that I think Americans, all Americans, want a respectful campaign."
A second student raised Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton's weekend visit to an Indiana bar, where she knocked back a shot of whiskey.
"I was wondering if you think that she's finally resorted to hitting the sauce just because of some unfavorable polling. And I was also wondering if you would care to join me for a shot after this?" the student asked.
Hoots and hollers came from the audience. McCain laughed, too.
"I did not see the clip of it but I certainly heard about it, and whatever makes Senator Clinton happy is ... is certainly, uh, certainly ...," McCain said with a broad smile, chuckling and raising his eyebrows.

Hillary threw back that boilermaker like an old pro. Very masculine of her.
The student who asked the “hitting the sauce” question was Steve Doocey’s son.
I liked the answer.
ha!
Way to swing and miss on couple of hanging curveballs Mac! Is Dennis Miller busy? Hire him! Practice few lines. Humor - it does the body good.
No foolin?
Sounds good, and respectful. Usually students my age like raising informal questions and informal commentary on politics(including “hitting the sauce”) so McCain’s come-backs were appropriate, befitting somebody of another generation who isn’t ignorant of my generation’s style of conversation. I definitely liked the questioners as they were very honest about the two Democrats.
Maybe they should run as President and VP.
Nope. He identified himself.
Sounds right. Doocey is an irrevernt kind of fellow
He’s kind of a cute kid and wasn’t rude.
I guess if I was his parent, I would get a kick out it too.
They are going to show the video of Peter right now on F&F.
Thanks, Miss Didi. It’s getting lots of play this morning.
He’s a cute kid.
Steve is so proud. ;)
I turned over to “Mourning Joe” on MSNBC and they have been playing the clip too. However, they only identify him as “the kid”, even though we know they know he is the son of F&F host Steve Doocey. LOL
I wonder if they will have Matthews on this “mourning” to discuss and if the spitter will acknowledge he is the son of F&F host Steve. HA! (as Chris would yell).
Their obvious avoidance of identifying him is humorous.
Not much else about the “mourners” is.

If she isn't by now, she never will. But it seemed more like partying shots in light of recent polling in Pennsylvania in the wake of Obama's gaffe. More than likely she's been hitting the shots since the days in the Governor's mansion in Arkansas.
But was what Obama said part of a deeper strategy?
Obama's Bitter Liberalism
At least the little butthead didn’t ask about boxers or briefs; a good reason to raise the voting age. Let the little skulls full of mush protest!
