“If Obama’s comments about working-class voters had come from the mouth of anyone except a candidate, they might have seemed mildly controversial but broadly true...”
Except for the fact that they aren’t true.
When these people aren’t sipping on ice water in Hell, I wonder who will be considered privileged?

It is amazing they are trying to justify these remarks. In context, they actually look much worse to me. He is presuming that lack of economic progress has made PA people narrow minded and ignorant.
This is NOT analysis. It is amazing ignorance. It also represents the type of generalization that form the core of racisim.

That’s the same thing that the left says about the “bitter” people -
they just aren’t smart enough to put the elite leftists in charge.

I think E.J Dionne confuses perception with reality. The truth of the matter is the Democrats do look down on folks who are not that well-heeled. And the contempt they have for average Americans choices just leaves people cold. Its like the Democrats have forgotten Americans are more than just the subset of people living in New York and Los Angeles.

Barack Obama violated two elementary rules of political campaigning. A candidate should never play the role of a political scientist or sociologist analyzing a key electoral swing group from afar and should never dissect the motivations of less privileged people when talking to a group of privileged people. If Obama's comments about working-class voters had come from the mouth of anyone except a candidate, they might have seemed mildly controversial but broadly true.
So Obama's remarks were factually true, but never should have been said by him; especially on the campaign trail.
Such talk is apparently alright when done in smoky back rooms, or over brandy and cigars. I get it.

Its pretty sickening that the wealthiest citizens rally to the aid of democrats.
Highly unlikely there were any "common man" type people attending that SanFran event. I would like to see a name list of these donors. Where do they get off assuming they are my proxies?

This is a true statement. But the cities of posh ignorance towards the American people are Washington DC and NYC. Both cities control the empire of America from a political and financial aspect. It is not forgivable, but understandable that both cities and immediate suburbs are not suffering from high unemployment or lack of anything. I am not resentful of a good job and life, I am resentful that it is these people’s jobs to survey the population, meet with individuals on the street and execute the will of the people. It does appear that the empire of America and those at the top look at the population as useful idiots and serfs. They have forgotten that We the People still can dethrone them, empire or no empire.

"And it's not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy toward people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations." Or you could just blame it on "Whitey".
